The day was grim, cold, empty; the sky littered with dark clouds. Though, it didn't rain. The previously mentioned clouds only blocked out the sun's shine.
Only one person stood alone, surrounded by little heaps of stone. Their expression was much like the day, grim. Silence was all that could be heard in the area.
That is, until a shaky breath escaped the isolated male.
"I... I'm sorry, it should've been me... I should've.. Dammit! I should've done something!" A sob interrupted his sentence, "I should've protected my best friend, god dammit!"
The male collapsed on his knees, facing one of the mounds of stone, a name seemingly carved into it.
"I know what you'd say, 'it's not your fault, you couldn't've stopped it', but you and I both know that isn't true. I was right there! If only I had used my quirk!" He gripped tightly onto the fabric of his shirt, careful not to damage the lilies in his other hand. "I saw him! I saw him about to use his quirk! It happened so fast.. yet it seemed to go in slow motion... I-"
A sob cut off his words, his breathing picking up.
Once he had calmed down a bit, he spoke again, placing the lilies on the dirt in front of him. "But all I did was watch as those... those things took the life from you! I watched as you were dying... I know you said it was okay! I know you said that it came out of nowhere; that I couldn't have reacted fast enough! But I could've! I could have stopped them!" He took a deep breath, wiping his tear stained cheeks.
"Goddammit, I'm so sorry. It's all my fault!" His words came out in whispers as he cried.
He felt a bit of pressure on his hair, like it was being touched, and glanced up.
What he saw amazed him, it was his friend. He looked alive! Healthy even! Was this all some sort of dream? "Hey, don't worry about it much. It's true. You didn't see him until it was too late." The hazy figure smiled softly.
"But.... I did, I saw him before he activated his quirk! You have a right to hate me, I'm the one who killed you"
"Why would I hate my childhood friend? You weren't the one who killed me, and you shouldn't blame yourself." The figure sounded distant, yet close.
The male shakily stood up, "Are you really here? Am I just dreaming? I dont know what to think right now... I dont know..."
The other put his hands on the male's shoulders, "Of course I'm here, I may be dead but I told you I'd watch over you, didnt I? And here, think this. There's nothing you could do to stop it, and no matter how much you wish for it, I can't come back. I know it sounds harsh but, please move on with your life. I don't want you grieving over me for the rest of your life. I'll appear from time to time, in pictures, sometimes in the corner of your eye. Just know that I'll always be there for you"
"You always knew how to make me feel better... Mirio... I'll still miss you though..." he sighed quietly
"That's perfectly normal. Make sure to tell Nejire and the others that I'll always be by y'all's sides." He pulled his childhood friend into a hug, "I wouldn't abandon my friends, even if I am dead."
The other smiled, gladly embracing the spirit tightly. "I will, thank you so much Mirio..." he breathed out, beginning to cry again.
"Just helping out my best friend." The spirit smiled, giving the dark haired male reassuring pats on the head.
A few moments passed before the spirit released the embrace and spoke up, "Well, it seems as if my time visiting is about over. I'll see you around, Tamaki! Remember that I'm always with you." The blond gave a large smile.
"I... I'll see you around..." Tamaki took a small breath, looking up at his friend.
"Oh wait! Before I go.." he pulled an object out of his pocket and shoved it in Tamaki's hand, quickly closing it into a fist. "Goodbye, Tamaki." He waved as he disappeared into the air, and the clouds began to move away from the sun, allowing its rays to shine on the earth.
The dark haired male smiled to himself, bringing his fist to his chest as he looked at the stone with a small smile gracing his features. "Goodbye... Mirio."
He tidied up the lilies above his friend's grave and took a step back, getting farther and farther from the stone.
He eventually turned around and headed toward the large black gates that surrounded the land. He paused and looked back at the grave, seeing a translucent figure waving at him.
The dark haired male waved and left the cemetary, a feeling of warmth engulfing him.
Once he arrived back at his dorms, he immediately went to go find Nejire, wanting to tell her the news.
"Hey, uh, Nejire. I need to.. to tell you something..." he looked over to the blue haired female, the female nodding and making her way toward the timid male.
"What is it Amajiki? Are you okay?" Her voice showed hints of concern in them.
"Yeah... I'm okay... I visited Mirio today, and I... he spoke to me... no I'm not crazy-"
He was cut off as he was abruptly shaken by his friend, catching him off guard.
"What did he say? What did he say?" She asked excitedly "I've heard of this! It's happened quite a few times!"
He quickly explained what Mirio had said, and mentally thanking Nejire for not thinking he was crazy.
"Mhmm! That's awesome! Oooo what's in your hand?" She peeked at his hand and grabbed it.
"I.. uh... I'm not sure, Mirio gave it to me, but I haven't checked what it was yet.." The male admitted, gently trying to take his hand from her grasp.
"Then look, silly! Maybe it's important"
He nodded "fine... can you give me my hand back... please?"
She hummed in approval and released her grasp, allowing the male to bring his hand closer to himself.
Tamaki took a deep breath and opened his hand, seeing two small charms. On each of them were pictures of him, Mirio, and Nejire together; when they had just become friends. As Tamaki flipped them over, he saw Nejire and his names engraved on them.
"This one.. was probably meant for you.." he held out the one with the female's name engraved into it and inspected his own.
The blue eyed female took hers and examined it. "Aww, I remember this!" She gave a nostalgic smile. "Mirio is so sweet..."
The timid male nodded, "I'm going to go to my room now.. see you later... Nejire.." he waved to her as he walked away, opening his dorm room door and placed the charm on his desk.
After he changed into some comfortable clothes, Tamaki rested his head on his pillow and fell asleep.
For the rest of Tamaki and Nejire's lives, they saw their blond friend quite often. Only managing to sneak glimpses of him before he disappeared. But they knew, even if Mirio was dead, he was still watching out for them.
