Hey guys, this is the first time I’m writing so would love to read any feedback; hopefully someone will actually read this.
Chapter 1
Emily’s POV
I was walking down the school corridor wondering how much trouble would I be in if I skip math to head for lunch early. I was absolutely starving. Ah, who was I kidding, I was not one to skip class, no matter how much my stomach demanded it. I walked by a group of the popular kids. Yes, our school did have them. Unlike the cliché you hear in stories they were not mean or bully the rest of the student body, at least the majority of them didn’t. They did follow the one general rule – if you didn’t stand in their way they didn’t bother you. Again most of them followed that rule.
The majority of the popular crowd consisted of the usual suspects, the cheerleaders and jocks. There were also few people who were accepted through charm, looks or money. As I was walking by my eyes met with Hale Johnson, the quarterback of our football team and the most popular guy in our school. He gave me a small smile. It was quick, barely there, but I noticed.
Some people might wonder why one of the hottest guys in school was smiling at me, after all I was definitely not part of the popular crowd, and thank god for that. I am what you would call a geek and proud of it. My name is Emily Thomson and the reason for the secret smile between me and Hale Johnson could be dated to two months ago, three weeks into the school year and the beginning of the history project.
Flashback
This promised to be another boring lesson, don’t get me wrong, history is one of my favorite subjects, as least in theory. I love to learn about things that happened long ago to people who are no longer here. And to anyone who says “who cares what happened hundreds of years ago” my answer would be – well if you studied it maybe we would not keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again. Anyway, the reason why I thought this would be a boring class was simple – people. Starting with the students who didn’t care and viewed school as a social gathering and finishing with the teacher, who was more concerned with catching the eye of some eligible bachelor, rather than teach anything remotely concerning her subject. For the past two years history was taught my Ms. Jacobs, a reasonably good teacher on the days that she put her mind to it. Unfortunately, over the summer I think, she finally realized that she is not getting any younger and decided to put more effort in other pursuits, i.e. finding a husband. What I don’t get is why her finding a husband has to come at an expense of my learning. I mean can’t she do both?!
Unfortunately, it would appear that just like an ugly duckling becoming popular and suddenly becoming dumb (I witnessed this phenomenon myself, how some freshmen would suddenly join cheer squad and change from being an A student with common sense, to someone who barely scrapes by in school and talks only about shopping and boys), Ms. Jacobs priority shift left her unable to pull off wearing makeup and getting in shape with teaching a history class. This meant that for the past three weeks out class has mainly consisted of reading chapters 1 and then 2 and then 3 and so on.
So as I was sitting in the classroom looking out of the window, preparing for another hour of reading I put my head on my hands ready to doze off – what can I say, I need to sleep more and have more interesting lessons, I felt a steering in the air. You know how the atmosphere changes suddenly, everything seems calm and quiet and then suddenly a volt of excitement passes through changing everything. Well this is exactly how I felt; I turned around and saw an incredibly beautiful man walk into the door.
“Hello class, my name is Mr. Smith. It would appear that Ms. Jacobs met someone and decided to get married in Vegas rather than teach this class so I’m your new history teacher” the beautiful man said.
This brought on a new wave of discussions as well as constant glances to the teacher from female population of the class. I could see why that would be the case. The man was beautiful; he had light brown hair, green eyes, was probably just under 6 feet and had a built that hinted to muscles underneath his shirt.
Just before the second bell rang Hale Johnson walked into the class like he owned the place. To be completely honest, he probably did. Hale Johnson – the resident golden boy. He was incredibly hot with his blue eyes, blonde hair and a muscular built topping at 6.1. His parents were well off, lawyers in a prestigious firm in town and spoilt him rotten. Things did not end there he was a complete player and oozed charm. All of this made him the king of our school and the most desirable guy to the female half of it. He gave a quick smile to one of his teammates and walked to sit next to him at the back of the classroom.
As soon as the bell rang Mr. Smith walked to the board and wrote his name down. “Settle down guys. For those of you just joining us, my name is Mr. Smith and I’m your new history teacher.” He tapped his chin with his index finger as though thinking of something, a small smile crossed his face briefly. “Well guys since I’m new here let’s start this year with something fun and interesting – a project”
There was a collective groan from the class, which was followed by the wider smile from the teacher.
“From the notes I read you seem to be well on track, so a it would seem that a project is just what you need to bring some life to this class. After all, history can be fun. So this is how it’s going to work. In pairs you have to choose a historic event that had a significant impact and tell it from two different perspectives. For example shooting of the J.F.K. could be told from the perspective of his family as American royalty and the politics fallout. And the pairs would be …”
He proceeded his stalemate by picking up class register and calling out names in random, pairing them without any semblance of order and that’s how I ended up partnered with Hale.
End of flashback
I continued on walking towards the class, dreading math, hoping it would pass quickly so I could get some lunch. Hale was barely on my mind, even though we had plans to get together after school. The reason for the get together was simple we were secretly dating.
