Chapter 4

Emily POV

“It was just a small scuffle. One of the boys in Daniel’s classes wanted to get the toy Daniel was playing with, so he pushed him to get it. Daniel fell, scratching his arm on the corner of the table. He should be fine for school tomorrow, just make sure that the scratch is clean.”

I breathed out a sigh of relief after hearing the explanation. “So I can take him home now?”

“Yes, you and your boyfriend are more than welcome to take him now, I just need you to sign here, and you may go” She said handing me some paper, that I signed. Her words finally registered as I was giving her the signed paper back.

Boyfriend?

I turned around, and finally noticed that there was someone else in the room with us. He looked familiar. I gave him a shy smile “Hi”

His amused grin was infectious; he opened the door letting me pass him.

“You have no idea who I am, do you?”

“You drove me here, right?” I was a bit uncertain on this. Everything after I answered the phone, informing me that there was an accident and I should come to pick my son from the nurse’s office was a bit of a blur.

“Yeh, you came to our table at lunch to ask Hale for the ride, but he could not, so I volunteered”

“Oh, thanks” Since it sounded a bit of handed, I decided to try again “I mean it, really, thank you. I was a nervous wreck”

“Emm, I hate to impose, but do you think you can give us a lift home?” I looked up at him hopefully. I really did not want to get the bus. My car has been in the shop for the past week and it was a pain to get home that way. It took half an hour longer.

Daniel shifted in my arms, finally taking his surroundings in pointed at the guy and said in his outside voice “MAMA. OO?”

“Aa, Daniel this is my friend…” I felt my cheeks starting to blush, I have no idea what his name was. He was one of the popular guys in our school, so you’d think that I would know his name, but I was coming up blank.

“Jared” he added helpfully

“And this is my son Daniel” At this Daniel reached out with his left hand in front of him, his right still squeezing my neck. He saw someone shake hands about a month ago, and discovered a new found love to be introduced to people.

Jared looked confused for a second and then stretched out his hand shook the small hand. It was actually very cute. “It is very nice to meet you” He said it in such a serious voice that it made me smile.

“I can give you a ride” I was lost for a second; I almost forgot that I asked him for a lift. Now that I looked around I saw that we were standing next to an expensive car.

Now I know absolutely nothing about cars, but even now I knew that this was BMW (ok I saw the emblem at the front), and that it probably cost more than most of the cars in our school parking lot, which was saying something

“Nice car”

“You know cars?” he sounded surprised

“No, but it looks nice”

He smiled again “It drives like heaven. Get in”

I told him my address and we headed there, with Daniel in my lap. This might not be the safest option, but I didn’t really have much of a choice.

The drive only took ten minutes and we were entertained by Daniel saying “Red” every time he saw a red car, which surprisingly was more often than one, might think.

He stopped in front of my house and I finally realized that I needed to ask him not to say anything to anyone in school “Do you want to come in”

“Sure”

We headed to the door, with Daniel bouncing alongside, the scratch on his arm forgotten.

I led him inside and through to the kitchen. At some point my worry had subsided and I remembered that I was starving. “I’m about to make lunch, do you want anything since I managed to make you miss yours”

“That sounds great, actually”

“Pasta Bolognese sounds ok?”

“Yep”

I kept an eye on Daniel as he was playing with his cars in the corner. This should hold his interest for the next hour or so.

Jared made himself comfortable at the kitchen counter, while I started cooking. I put on some music; I did it on autopilot as I usually listen to the radio whilst cooking. I saw Jared raising his eyebrows and my breath was caught in my throat.

It was a first time I actually looked at him. He was gorgeous. He was 6.2 or 6.3 with a muscular build, had black hair, long enough to run your fingers through, almost black eyes, strong chin and a bit of a crooked nose that looked like it had been broken at some point. He had a bit of a dangerous edge to him that only added to the appeal. I’m not sure where that edge was coming from, but I can’t remember being this comfortable around anyone in a very long time.

Hell, he was the first person I have invited into this house that didn’t necessarily have to be here, and a first person under the age of 35, apart from me and Daniel, to enter this house since I lived here.

With this realization, I turned away from here to compose myself. I needed a minute.

I started humming to the song, and only realized what I was doing when I heard a chuckle. He was looking at me with an unreadable expression. I decided to ignore it for now and to continue preparing our meal.

Soon I had two plates with food on the counter ready to be consumed. If I say so myself, I’m a great cook, and the idea of food within reach made my mouth water.

“Dig in” I said and followed said command

“This is delicious”

“I know” I might be shy in school, but modesty is not really my strong suit

After we finished eating and I put the plates in the sink, I took a breath and “So, do you mind not telling anyone in school about Daniel. I’m not ashamed of him or anything like this, but I don’t want people to know”

“Sure, no problem”

“I should head out” I walked him to the door

“Thanks again, for the ride, I really appreciate it”

“You are welcome; do you need one for the school tomorrow?”

“Yes, I have to drop off Daniel first though”

“Ok, so what time should I pick you up?”

I saw his smirk and realized that I was starring t him with my mouth hanging slightly ajar. “7.15 should work”

“Ok, I’ll see you then. Bye” with those words he headed towards his car giving me a small wave, just before he drove off.
