Religion has been apart of every civilization for as long as there has been a written history. Religions started out as a way to explain why things happened. The Greeks had a story as to why the seasons changed. Religion use to be intertwined with the Government of that time period. Now-a-days, most of those religions have turned into myths. But there was a point where people worshiped those religions.
There are very few civilizations that did not start out with a religion. Religion shaped countries, it started wars, and killed millions. Religion can be a good tool to use. It is a motivator for many things.
If you are writing about the future, it makes sense for there to be no religion. Maybe the religion died out over the years. So not having one would make sense. But for most medieval settings, some kind of religion is almost required. It might not have a big part of your story, but you never know what direction you might go with your story in the future.
You might want to think about who or whom they are worshiping. Is there one god/goddess or more than one? And you should also think about how they worship those god(s). In past times, people would sacrifice animals and even people as a way to worship their deities. Others sing and dance as a way to worship.
It is something that you should keep in mind when creating your world.
