What is World Building

So, the first thing you have to know is what exactly is world building and why is it important?

World building is usually defined as creating an imaginary world. It is very important for you to be able to know how the world works before you start creating a story inside it. When you do not think about the  details of how the world works, you are more prone to writing contradicting story lines. The story can end up suffering because of this. 

Think about it this way, when you write a story based in out reality, you already know how the world works. You do not have to think about how society would feel if aliens came to our planet to kill us. Or what would happen if we discovered a new eco-friendly fuel source. But that is not the case when you are creating your own, unique world. You do not need to follow every chapter that I write about here, or even put everything that you work out throughout this book into your story. But it is important that you know how certain things work. 

When you take the time to really map out the world you intend to write about, your story feels more real. It feels more whole to the reader. A well built world will bring the reader further into it and help them drive your story forward.  

There are a few benefits to filling out the world completely. When you do, you can add little aspects to the story that would not be there otherwise.  Like, maybe you add a little dialogue about how many people hate the way things are run. Or maybe you add a rivalry between the two races. Little things like that can really bring the story to reality. It might seem like minor details, but when put together, creates magic. Not to mention, it is a great way to practice your writing as well as help you keep writers block at bay.
