"Hey Hazel can you cover the front for a few minutes?" Marlie yells as she is already running out the back door with her phone pressed against her ear.
Responding back, my voice thick with sarcasm, "Of course I won't. Doing my job? Crazy." She scoffs at me through the door as I laugh.
Setting down my phone and hitting shuffle, the sounds of The Beatles ring through the shop. It was a laid back, whole in the wall that had the best chocolate scones in all of New South Wales. I felt pretty lucky to get to work here. Most shops aren't too keen on international employees. Currently on a university exchange from Canada, I had some time to kill before the second semester. Since everything at the bar had been cleaned and we were dead, I decided it was time for me to tackle rearranging the bags of coffee on our bookshelf display. Grabbing a chair I skillfully balanced myself as I sorted through the top shelf. A loud ding rang through the shop, signalling someone had entered.
"I'll be with you in just a second." I pipe cheerfully, a quiet 'no problem' is the person's response as I hear a chair get pulled out of one of the tables behind me. Stepping down and wiping my hands on my apron I don't look up till I'm behind the counter. When I look up, I'm kinda surprised to see a boy in his mid-twenties relaxed reading a book. He's covered in tattoos but it matches his look of ripped black jeans, heavy Doc Martens and clack sunglasses. I grab a pen and a small notepad and make my way over to him.
"What can I get for you today sir?" flinching slightly when I speak, he doesn't look up though.
"Hazelnut Iced coffee, extra sweet darling." His words flow smoothly, he sounds familiar but I can't put my finger on it.
"Alright, is that for here or to go?"
"For here." he responds flatley.
"Perfect, I should have that ready in just a few minutes." He ignores me and I putter back to behind the counter. The music as now switched over to some pop ballad that my friend added to the wrong playlist. Quickly skipping it, I'm met with the sound of The Doors, Unhappy Girl and I get back to making this kids coffee.
"This is a really good song." he pipes in out of nowhere as I search for the hazelnut syrup. "What radio station is this?" Not answering, I stir his drink and bring it over to him.
"It's actually not the radio it's my spotify."
"That's a funny joke sweetheart, what is it K407?" He smirks as he takes a sip from the glass in front of him. "Lovely drink by the way."
Scoffing I turn towards the kitchen and grab my phone and walk back over to the boy and hold it out in front of me for him to grab.
"Here, look from this and see."
"Odd request but alright." He begins scrolling through, eyes widening the farther he gets down the list. When he reaches the bottom he looks like he's seen a ghost.
"You have to be joking? That's your playlist?" His tone makes my blood boil just a little bit.
"Yeah? Have you never met a girl with a solid rock playlist before?"
"Not one who wasn't trying to impress me."
"Someones a little cocky aren't they?"
"Wouldn't you wanna impress a rockstar with a killer playlist that would make him think you were the one. A playlist so good he'd forget you're trying to use him for his fame because you forgot he can see when you added each song." I shoot him a confused glance as he continues.
"Trust me sweetheart, it happens all the time." After taking a quite obnoxious slurp of his coffee he is still going on his tangent.
"I'm surprised you haven't realize who I am yet, seeing as my bands on your list. Michael wants another slice is a funny choice but Babylon is a solid choice." As he removes his sunglasses it hits me, I was never really a die hard fan so forgive my stupidity.
"Calum Hood."
"Hello darling, it's nice to meet you, what's your name?"
I stuttered a little bit as play with my bracelet. "Hazel."
"Beautiful name for a beautiful girl I must say but I think I'm gonna go with hazelnut cause it's more fun. You don't sound like you're from here. America?"
"Canada." He chuckles lightly as swirls his straw in what is now a cup full of ice.
"Damn, you killed my both of my really bad pickup lines."
