The Vamps

Heaving my sleeping bag over one shoulder and my bag on the other, I departed the alley without another glance. I moved places all the time. Granted, I was rarely alone, but London was just another place.

I had prepared myself for something bizarre, something confusing, but in no way had my mind reached this possibility.

“Oh my god The Vamps Oh my god-”

Girls, dozens of them, physically attacking and pushing and all screaming. My ears throbbed with the noise, and I forcefully tried to push my way through them.

“Hey!” An arm reached out and grabbed my shoulder. With a grunt, I turned to face whoever had hit me.

It was a girl, maybe my age or a bit younger, with long blonde hair and braces. She frowned at me, and shouted over the large volume to get her demand/question out.

“WHO ARE YOU? WHY WERE YOU TALKING TO BRAD? ARE YOU HIS GIRLFRIEND?”

What? “No,” I said harshly. “Not even close.”

“WHO ARE YOU THEN?”

I shook my head. Why was this her business? Was she Bradley’s friend? No, I had decided. These people weren’t their friends. They were crazy and obnoxious and loud. Unless these boys had a different kind of relationship with their friends than normal people. But these girls almost seemed like… Fans.

Reluctantly, I lied. Bradley had told me that they couldn’t know anything. And even though I didn’t know him, I felt like maybe I should believe him. At least in this case.

“I don’t even know who he is?” I told her, sounding more like a question than an answer.

Despite how much I wondered, I felt as though I would never get a reply to What. Was. Going. On.

The girl nodded, not taking the time to question me again, before she turned back into the crowd and tried to push herself into the middle.

I almost couldn’t even see them- the boys. They were so surrounded by people, like the honey by the bees, that they were barely visible. Over the many girls’ heads though, I caught sight of curly dark hair. He, and the three others, were in the middle of this.

And I can’t even begin to explain my confusion of why.

Bradley, in the middle of laughing and signing a young girl’s t-shirt, met my gaze. His grin remained, but his eyes immediately became more solemn.

I felt a clench in my stomach.

Giving him a small wave and receiving a brief head nod, I turned and left. Like he had asked me to. My feet pounded against the sidewalk, my steps heavy. Something about me was too ready to leave, but at the same time, wanting to stay.

As soon as I got far enough away, though. I at once felt at peace. That scene… it was too chaotic. Too… different. Every part of it.

At least I was away now.

The streets were fairly empty, and night was descending upon the city. Lampposts and shops lit the way, but I couldn’t help but feel an eeriness in the air. Normally I was settled in by now, with my friends and my stolen goods. But things, all in the course of twenty minutes, had changed entirely. Whether for the good or the bad, I couldn’t tell. But things, within the next hour or so, were going to continue changing. And those changes were definitely not good.
