I have a brother. I have a brother. I have a brother. My mind kept repeating it, over and over again, still not comprehending. I had always considered myself broken, but maybe… something could be mended.
No, I told myself. Don’t be foolish. He obviously didn’t want you to make contact again. You’d be a nuisance in his life and whatever that was. You don’t even know him. No. Don’t be foolish.
Besides, I didn’t need his help.
It must’ve been around 7 PM. My stomach growled hungrily, an aching numbness, but by this point in my life hunger didn’t bother me. I was used to it. I decided not to get dinner, not sure what the next few days and not sure meals would come as easily as beforehand.
A small part of me regretted that I hadn’t taken Bradley’s money. Oh well- it was too late now.
I shivered. My sweater was threadbare, and the autumn chill went right through it. I had already been walking for an hour, but I didn’t think that Nia and Jared could’ve gone much farther. They must’ve stopped. Maybe they were just waiting for me in another alleyway.
A voice made me freeze in my tracks.
“Hey, are you okay? It’s a little late to be out here.” Swinging around, I spotted a young man, probably in his mid-twenties. He leaned against the outside of a shop, cigarette in between his fingers, his dark hair unruly. His eyes, a dark shade of blue, were bloodshot.
“I’m fine,” I said, and continued walking.
“Are you sure?” He called after me. “Young girls shouldn’t be out at night. Especially pretty ones like you.”
I kept my head down, and didn’t reply. Surely he would stop talking.
“Do you need a ride home?”
He was following me.
“No.” My voice was loud and clear. “I’m fine,” I said again.
“Are you sure? I can take you anywhere you wanna go. It’s pretty f-ing cold out.”
“Yes,” I said sharply, turning around. “My- my boyfriend is picking me up, just right out here. But thanks for offering.” The last bit was dry, but I tried to sound sincere.
He looked at me, his dark blue eyes boring holes. I could tell that he didn’t believe me, and that was when I began to feel nervous. “London can be dangerous,” Bradley had said. A shudder went through my body.
But with a quick dip of his head, he said, “Alright. Take care of yourself.”
“Thank you,” I told him, and hurried off.
Another twenty minutes, and I was still walking. The sky was black by now, and I was utterly alone. Even if Nia and Jared were out there somewhere, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to see them.
It was time for me to settle down anyway. If I continued going all night, which was an option, I’d be a walking zombie.
Shuffling around in my purse, I finally caught hold of my map. I had been continuing down the same street this whole time, but maybe it was time I made a turn. I headed toward the streetlight, straining my eyes to see through the dark…
Wham!
I slammed straight into the back of someone, dropping my map and hitting my head.
“Oh my god, I am so sorry-” I began scrambling.
“That’s fine. Is everything alright? You look lost.”
I didn’t reply, already crouching to the ground and trying to grab it, but- going together with my awful luck- along came a gust of wind.
“Shit!” I cried out. I got up, about to run after it, but something had fisted itself in the back of my coat and held me back.
“It’s already gone,” a low voice said. “I’ve got a map myself. You can use mine.”
I ripped myself away from the person, and found myself facing another man. This one was younger, but not by much. He dug around in his pocket and held his out.
My eyes narrowed. I was distrusting but… I needed a map. At least to figure out where I was. “Really? Thank you-”
I was interrupted by a cough. But it wasn’t the man in front of me who did it.
Standing behind him, I saw. It was the man with the blue eyes.
That was when I realized that things were terribly, terribly wrong.
