It was a blistering hot night. The moon gleamed in front of me and the sky was black like onyx and dusted with stars. It was ten-forty-five at night and I was on my way home after a delicious wine and dine which consisted of meatloaf, lamb gravy and a mixure of baby potatoes and carrots that I had at my sister Brittany's house and her pompous husband Fred.

I disliked Fred secretly, just because he was a business tycoon he thought that there was nobody like him as for my darling sister she was a humble and friendly teacher. And me? I am a thirty-two year old paramedic.

I adjusted my review mirror and drove a little slower as I have trouble seeing at night. I hate driving at night its scary and nerve wrecking even though I wear glasses only when driving at night. I am sure some of you have that experience.

I should have listened to Brittany and stayed over after all it was the peak of the weekend however I just could not stand being around Fred any longer he was like finger nails against a chalk board, he just made me cringe every time that he spoke.

I would rather battle in the night going home than being in the same house as him. What did Brittany see in the jerk? Not like he was drop dead gorgeous.

I should have just drank less or left earlier but I couldn't Brittany wouldn't let me and we had such fun together.
I turned down 2nd Lane and drove. This road was extremely dark and bared no street lights, great, it had gone from bad to worse. As I drove I saw a figure in the distance which grew as I drove closer.

I then realised that it was a young girl like in her mid teens. She thumbed for a lift and I felt confused. I had never been in this situation before. My friend Beth said that she just drives past ignoring them due to all the stories you hear about offering strangers a lift.

I watched the girl then the road my gaze moving back and forth, should I or shouldn't I? She looked so harmless and vulnerable. She looked scared as much as I did. Perhaps she was lost or abandoned by someone. I felt bad just leaving her there.

What if I was her only chance of survival and if I ignore her she might be found dead?
I looked at the girl, she had short red hair, thin and wore a jeans and black jacket.
I found my foot pressing the brake pedal and the car stopped next to her.

She immediately opened the door, jumped in and shut the door.
I noticed her blue-grey eyes, freckled cheeks and droopy lips.
"Thank you so much." She said.
"No problem. Where are you going?" I asked feeling afraid and uncomfortable.

"Down West you can drop me off there thanks." She said.
I nodded and took off glad that West was on the way.
"So what are you doing out here alone?" I asked.
"My stupid boyfriend and I got into an argument and he just drove off leaving me." She replied.

I'm sorry was all that I could say. We drove in silence when her mobile suddenly rang. I saw her fumble nervously. I wanted to ask her why however did not want to pry and settled on the idea that perhaps her boyfriend was calling with some sort of apology.

She eventually answered her phone, "Hello...yes this is Lynn Black...okay bye."
We approached the West and I stopped my car for her to jump off.

She thanked me once again then I drove off. As I drove I heard the news come on from my car radio which was turned down really low. I loved listening to the news and knowing what was happening around the world. I turned up the volume and listened.

"A seventeen year old girl is on the loose and wanted for the murder of twenty year old Tom Kent. It is believed that she is armed and dangerous. The girl is about thin, with short red hair, blue-grey eyes, freckles and droopy lips. She is wearing jeans and a black jacket and her name is Lynn Black. Anyone sees this girl please contact the police immediately."

I felt the blood in my body freeze and my heart clench. My first experience with a hitchhiker and she turned out to be a cold blooded murderer!

Thank God she did not hurt me. I immediately increased the speed in my car and drove home never making the same mistake of offering anyone a lift again.
