Ten years old - 1914
"Not you again" Amelia sniffled, quick to wipe away her tears as she turned to see Isaiah walking down the school yard approaching her, "Just leave me alone I'm not in the mood to fight with you"
Since they could walk and talk Isaiah Jesus and Amelia Shelby had rubbed each other the wrong way. The two children seemed to be always bickering, not for any particular reason, the pair in a room together was like a tornado meeting a volcano, it simply just never ended well, "I wasn't planning on picking a fight" He shrugged.
"You what?" Amelia scoffed, "You never speak to me if it's not to be mean"
"Funny coming from you" He laughed, "I just wanted to ask what's wrong, why did you run out of class and why are you crying?" Amelia contemplated telling him, what's the worst that could happen if she did?
"It's my brothers" Her voice sounded broken, sad in a way that broke even Isaiahs heart, "They've volunteered to fight in France, they leave in a week"
The idea of pulling her in for a hug to comfort her danced in the boys head. He pushed any reservations and past disagreements aside as he wrapped his arms attentively around the weeping girl. In that moment Amelia Shelby had realised something; Isaiah Jesus wasn't all that bad.
Twelve years old - 1916
Ever since that day at school Isaiah and Amelia had grown closer being pretty much inseparable, much to her brother Finns dismay.
They walked along the cut together, in comfortable silence for a while until Isaiah spoke up, "Lia have you ever had a boyfriend?" He asked.
Amelia shook her head, "No"
Isaiah stopped turning to face her in shock, "How have you never had a boyfriend but Anna Davis has?" He questioned, referencing a girl from school who Amelia happened to hate irrevocably.
She shrugged her shoulders sheepishly, "I dont know, no one's ever liked me like that"
Isaiah knew that wasn't true, he'd had a crush on the Shelby girl for over a year, and so any time a boy had told him of their feeling towards the girl he had warned them of. "But you're so pretty" He blurted out. Blood rushed to Amelias skin, as the blush stood out amongst her pale porcelain complexion.
Fourteen years old - 1918
Amelia knocked on the door to Isaiahs house frantically, beyond ecstatic and bursting to tell him the brilliant news. Isaiah opened the door, he was shocked at first, as Amelia flung into his body wrapping her arms firmly around his neck. He happily welcomed the embrace as he chuckled, "Whats gotten you all happy then?"
She pulled away from the hug still grinning like a cheshire cat, "They're coming home Isaiah, my brothers and your father they're finally coming back, the war its over"
Isaiah froze for a second, taking a moment to digest the information before grinning down at the Shelby girl. Without waring he propelled her into the air spinning her around as she erupted into giggles before he placed her feet safely back onto the ground.
Their eyes locked as their faces where now inches apart with their forheads resting against each other. It took all his courage but Isaiah leaned in brushing his lips against hers. Amelia happily reciprocated the kiss, it was delicate and sweet: everything she had hoped her first kiss would be.
