Short story 1 🏡 - Family Pressure

The family name "Medthanan" was a famous one in Thailand. They were one of the most elite families of Thailand. They were a big family with the old and the young generation all settled in Thailand. Not all those who belonged to the big wide spread family tree were rich. There were relatives who were not that well to do and some of the others who were not exposed to city life ever as they lived in villages.

A single person who kept them all connected was the senior Mrs. Siriporn Medthanan whom younger generation called grandmother and the older referred to her as Madam. She was a person who was ahead of her generation. After the early death of her husband she had run the business alone successfully and brought it to where it was today.

She had two sons and two daughters all of whom were married. All her children used to live under one roof with her. Mean Medthanan the son of her youngest daughter was her favourite. He was in the final year of his education. A star of his University because of his good looks, intelligence, a member of the boy-band of the college where he sang and played guitar, fluent in many languages, was already into modelling and used to help his grandmother in the business.

Mean Medthanan came out as a cold hearted and proud person. He very well knew how influential his family was and used to carry himself as someone not everyone could have access to.

He had no dearth of girls wanting to date him. From their family friends daughters to children of their business associates to girls from his University, Mean had all of them ready to give their hearts to him. One of their business associates daughter Som was pursuing him since many years. She had tried every trick in the book to get close to Mean's parents and the Medthanan family as a whole. It was not wrong to say that it looked like she had even succeeded to a large extent. She was sure if there was anyone Mean would marry it would be her.

Can Kirakorn was from Mrs. Siriporn Medthanan's eldest son's wife's family. Hardworking, bubbly and reserved yet talkative with those he was very close to. He loved helping his father in their farm and had a passion for cooking.

Mrs. Siriporn Medthanan loved spending few days in year with Can's family. She used to insist that Can cook for her everyday during her stay. She loved Can a lot and had convinced his father to allow Can to study in the city to which Can's father had agreed after as lot of deliberation.

Can used to stay in the hostel and come to meet Mrs. Siriporn during weekends. He was studying in the same University as Mean.

Mean and Can couldn't look at each other eye to eye. They used to fight whenever they met at the pettiest to the most serious things. From childhood till date they kept their enemity alive. The only thing that changed as they grew older was that they stopped arguing verbally. It was a silent hatred. They used to make it a point to ignore each other and stay away from each others way, specially when they saw each other at the University.

Can used to also hate Som who used to not leave a single chance in insulting him because his family was not that well to do and they lived in a village.

Then one day Mrs. Siriporn Medthanan called all her children together for a talk. She was not keeping well and the family started worrying about her health. The meeting was attended by all her children, their spouses and their children along with their family doctor and lawyer. She had already made her will in which her son's ,daughter's and their children had a share. Inheriting the Medthanan property was not going to be easy. There were lots of conditions specified and only on fulfilling those, could you claim your right. The loyal workers at the mansion and at the workplace. who had been with Mrs. Siriporn Medthanan for years together also had a share in the property.

The biggest shock came to Mean's parents when they were told that in order for their family to get a share in the property they had to get Mean married. The marriage had to take place soon, as Mrs. Siriporn Medthanan wanted to live to see Mean settled and have children. She expressed her desire that Mean should marry Can. The entire room went silent in shock. No one dared ever object to anything that Mrs. Siriporn Medthanan said but this was way too much for anyone to digest. Mean was her most favourite grandson. Why would she do this to him. All the cousins looked at Mean. Specially Perth, Title and Mark who were very close to Mean. They were ready to fight for him. What shocked everyone again was that Mean agreed without putting up any fight. Not even a word was said by Mean against his grandmother's decision.
