Chapter Five

In my head, I imagined the different scenarios of how this 'meeting' would turn out. The scene from Harry Potter Six, where he is trialled for using magic in the presence of a muggle popped up in my imagination. I thought being an untrusted outsider would result in me being strapped to a chair in the spot light and surrounded by the jury to decide on me being innocent or guilty. What ever reassurance I got from Gabriel and the Seraphim disappeared and butterflies relocated themselves inside my stomach. The cool smile on Nathaniel's face no longer helped me to feel better. Now that I was beginning to understand his moody nature and his hatred for my kind.

My feet took one shaky step forward. This wasn't right. I urged myself, I needed my confidence back. It was sad how one day could change me, tear me apart and create someone new out of my body. I knew I couldn't look back at Nathaniel because he'd be grinning his wicked grin at how things were for me now, reinstating the fact that it was all over. I felt like a dead man walking.

I took another awkward step, taking in the surroundings of the court. All around the room, bookcases covered the walls. It appeared to be a communal study room with desks forming a ring. A classic off-white lounge sat in the middle of the room, acting as a vantage point for everyone to scrutinize.

A husky voice droned my name in one monotone. I couldn't control my eyes from automatically shooting towards the voice. An aged man sat behind a table much larger than the others, presenting himself as superior. His spectacles pushed half way down his nose and it appeared he was over dramatizing the look of an elder, as he looked like he could have been quite attractive in his younger days. He only looked about forty. Guess he rathered the dramatic look.

There was a clearing of someones throat and again, my eyes followed. This elder was the fat bald man that had taken my freedom away a few days ago. Involuntarily my nose scrunched up in hatred. He looked somewhat out of place among the sophisticated looking elders. I did one silent gulp and focused my gaze on a blank space of wall behind the first elder.

"Come, come," The important man said with haste, his hands signaling me to sit on the lounge before them. His voice sounded as if he had something blocking the airways to his nose. Most probably his glasses. "How we looked forward to meeting such an interesting specimen today." He clapped his hands. "Quite interesting you are..."

His fingers laced together just below his chin, his eyes literally staring in amazement. Under his stare I shifted my weight on the seat. No matter how I sat, it just wasn't comfortable.

"Our darling Gabriel has informed you on our... request?" His eyes still locked with mine and a smile half formed on his lips.

"Yes, sir." I tried to say as formal as possible, but it was like he hadn't heard me. I cleared my throat before it had the chance to break again.

"We do ask that in favor for you keeping your life is that you shall serve our armies? In the war against demons... How unfortunate you must fight against your kind but..." His eyes dropped from my eyes and to my hands I had nervously intertwined.

My stomach dropped, I hadn't had the chance to find a glove this morning and my mark was on display to all. I flipped my hand in my lap and began to chew my lip.

"Come." He said in a soothing tone and snapped his fingers. I sat there unsure of what to do. "Come." He repeated, this time not as kind.

With legs made from jelly I stood up and made my way to him. Before I knew what was happening, he snatched my left hand and turned it so the mark faced him. He moved it slowly watching as the light bounced of the black mirror like substance that stained my hand, caught in its appeal.

"Interesting," He mumbled and pushed his specs back up to his nose taking in every detail.

I wanted to ask him what he thought but the words wouldn't form on my tongue. Never had I ever felt so silenced.

"Where did you get this?" He enquired, fascinated with the rainbows shooting all over the room.

"I was born with it." I said, not really believing myself this time. Nobody believed me.

Strangely enough, the man didn't react to my answer like most people did. I took it, that he knew I was telling the truth. Trying not to be disrespectful I with drew my hand. His eyes connected with mine for a brief moment and his hands sprung open. There was unnatural warmth in his eyes as they looked me over. All the other eyes were staring at him, waiting for his response with expectant faces.

Nervous, I disconnected for the stare. The elder cleared his throat as if looking away was the wrong thing to do. "Look at me."

I was forced to make uncomfortable eye contact again, wondering what he could possibly want with just looking at me silently. Then I became amazed, when his eyes shifted colour, from a slate grey to a vibrant ice blue.

It was odd having someone stare at you for a while and not get bored, because obviously my eyes weren't changing colour. It felt like he was penetrating into my deep thoughts. He held my eyes for a few minutes then punched some buttons into a keypad built into his desk. It reminded me of a boss making a decision to press the red or the green button, which would result in me falling down a hole or the hounds being released, or something good could happen. I felt my self begin to shake with panic.

"I'm a tad hungry." He smiled at his absolutely random comment. "Anyway, what kind of demon did you say you were?"

"I didn't"

"No you didn't... Alexei," he sighed, but in a happy way, "I don't actually thin your Satanic or demonic, in that matter of fact, I believe your soul is about as equally wholesome as we are. Apart from your sins which define you as a bodies true nature, your case is a horrible experiment gone wrong."

Experiment, I thought to myself. Most creatures are not experiments, purely created from the hands of god and made perfect just the way they are... So I was told. If I was an experiment, an abnormality and specifically designed to be a killing machine, where did that leave me? I was entirely something different and not one of gods 'perfect' creations.

"Has anyone told you about your biological parents? Or... your creators?" He enquired, tilting his head to one side.

"No?" I began to feel irratable as earlier events resurfaced. My whole life, was a lie.

"How unfortunate. I would love to learn about your kind, seeing as there are so few... however I'm glad to say, we have our theories. Not facts, you can't believe everything I say. I'm still procastinating whether we should share it with you yet."

The words, "so few" stuck in my mind. It made me feel inspired as I now knew that was more of us, back in history or in other parts of the world. I wasn't entirely alone.

"Your sleep walking..." The elder continued... That caught my attention. My eyes locked with his in wonder how he knew about it. I wasn't sure if he was going to give me hope, or cast me aside. "There's a way it can be cured."

I couldn't help the smile from spreading across my face. I had a choice, either to believe it or not ge my hopes up. I chose to believe it, not really caring about the emotions it may cause in future. Too be rid of this disorder would be perfect, I didn't think that anything could make me happier.

The elder seemed pleased at my delight. He also smiled wide and stood, "You are satisfied with how things are going to be from now on?"

"Do you promise?" I asked, referring to his previous statement. I sounded like an vulnerable child ready to take his word, so trusting, as if nothing else mattered.

He considered for a second, "We'll try our best."

"Then I am satisfied."
