Freedom at last for Alexei

Chapter Four

I closed the door behind me, feeling a lot more lighter than I should have. Gabriel had a strange mood about him. He could be serious and friendly at the same time. I guess it was all this business about being kind. Was he the leader? I didn't think so, he was too young. Then again, there was something that told me he had been forced to grow up way too quick.

Leader? I asked myself and looked out onto the wide hall way I just stepped into. King more like it. There was way too many people in this small space, they couldn't just be a group of rebels... How many demons were there if there was this many angels?

I took a few steps, taking in my surroundings. Then thought it would be better to wait instead of getting lost in this hallway where every door looked the same. The walls were a light olive green that began to make me feel sick when I looked at it too long, paneled half way up in dark mahogany wood. The Victorian furniture was not what I expected from inside the white cell.

A hand rested on my shoulder. I over reacted a little, flicking the hand away and spinning around. It was Gabriel, just leaving the room. He smiled and waved over a boy with slanted eyes and glossy black hair styled in a disarray of tall spikes. He didn't look happy at all.

How he knew where I was, I had no idea. Neither how he could just spin around and call someone over. When he turned I noticed in hid left ear he had an ear piece.

"Nathaniel, this is Alexei." Gabriel chided. "You know the orders."

"Gosh, Gab! I thought we were friends." Nathaniel frowned.

"Sorry, I've taken control for the day. I don't have time for friends." Gabriel smiled and walked away. "Be nice!" He shouted over his shoulder.

So he wasn't the leader, but filling in. I felt disappointed, expecting a girl for once, not another boy. I looked around, there were no young people at all, maybe everyone was in school. Everyone seemed to have no where to go, wondering around and looking through the window panels in the doors.

"So..." Nathaniel said a little awkward, carrying out the 'o'. I half smiled expecting him to start up a conversation but he said nothing. When I glanced his way, he looked like an anime come to life.

We passed through the double doors at the end of the hall way and entered an open space. I had forgotten about the sunshine, how much I missed it. Light streamed in through the windows and I felt like a could go jump in it like jumping under a water sprinkler on hot days.

Nathaniel sighed, "How to say this without offending you."

I narrowed my eyes and glared at him, he just looked straight ahead, "Say what?"

"Please don't go all psycho demon on my ass but, what's the go? Like-" My laugh cutting him off. "Oh good, you never know. Most demons over react when you question their existence. But then they wouldn't have let you in if you were like most of them." He sighed.

"I guess, I didn't even know about demons before today. So, no offense taken."

He laughed, "By the look on your face, I seriously thought I was a goner."

"And what about you? What are you?"

He stopped walking and gawked at me, "What do you mean... What am I?"

My feet stopped too and I repeated the sentence in my head trying to figure out how that could offend someone. What are you? In a normal conversation, maybe it would be offensive to ask someone I had just met. Implying that they weren't normal. I felt guilty by singling him out. None of us are normal here I figured.
