Kimberly's P O V:After a long and grueling day of school, it was finally over. I didn't know how to feel about it. I had always hated it, but the thought of growing up into an adult and never being able to return was still scary. In many ways, I wish I could stay eighteen for the rest of my life, only to avoid a lifetime of responsibilities and problems. But alas, I had finally left school and now I had to deal with life and all its bullshit, how fun.
At least I had a year of freedom. I've decided to go to college next year, for now, I'm sticking with my mediocre job at the bakery and allowing myself to relax in my free time.
I internally laugh at the reminder of how the bakery was quite literally shutting down as of tomorrow, so I wasn't actually sticking with it. I send Ellie a quick text, telling her to meet me outside the building so Cam can drive us both to work. She gets there quickly and we don't have to wait long until my brother shows up. I can't help the way my shoulders sag with relief, I hadn't realized how tense I had been all day with Cam lingering at the back of my mind.
"How did it go?" I ask once inside the passenger seat.
"The job? Yeah, it went fine. I told you it wasn't dangerous," He offers me a gentle smile. Liar. Every job he gets given is dangerous.
I let my eyes run over his figure, noticing the dirt that had embedded itself into the material of his clothes that looked pristine when he left this morning. His hands looked filthy too, with his hair in complete disarray.
"You look disgusting," I hum as I lean forward to play a different song.
"Ghee, thanks," He huffs.
It doesn't take long until we finally make it to work. Me and Ellie walk in, the familiar jingle of the rusted bell above the door signaling our arrival. Our manager Kirsty comes out from the back with flour pressed against her apron and cheeks. She offers us both a smile that doesn't quite reach her lips. I could tell it was tearing her apart having to close the business down as it was family-owned, but it wasn't making enough as it used to and business was slow, she didn't have much choice. Even then, she still offered us a warm welcome as she motioned for us to come get our aprons on.
"Hey girls," We greet her back, doing some small talk as we get our aprons on.
Soon enough, Kirsty's returning round back so she can go back to finishing her cake, leaving me and Ellie on front to deal with a newly placed order for a wedding cake. The thing I loved most about working here was the designing. It was one of the few things I actually enjoyed doing and I'd say I'm pretty good at it too. Anything art related I was pretty decent at, I'd improved a lot through the years as I liked to draw sometimes, usually to cure my boredom or just for therapeutic reasons.
"It's actually scary how good you are," Ellie swoons as she watches me carefully apply the frosting designs around the edge of the cake, her eyes full of astonishment and her mouth agape. You'd think I was Buddy Valastro from Cake Boss judging by the reaction she was giving.
To be honest, I was completely unsure how Ellie managed to get her job here. She worked here for like a month before me with zero experience in any sort of baking or design. It was safe to say they had a lot of customer complaints due to her sloppy work. Once, she had tried to write 'Have a Happy Birthday Harry," for this eight-year-old, but the parents had ended up mistaking it for "Have a Horny Birthday Harry," safe to say they ended up returning the cake looking less than pleased.
