"Nico where are you taking me?!" I asked as Nico still covered my eyes with his hands.
I'm Ava Sanchez. I have long, brown hair and silver eyes. I love nature and the woods. Today is my 17th birthday and my best friend Nico has a surprise for me.
Nico is 16. He's been my friend for a whole year and we already know everything about each other.
This is how Nico and I met.
I was speed walking while reading a Divergent book through the halls of Evermore high, when I bumped into someone and hit my forehead against theirs.
"God damn it!" I said rubbing my head in pain.
The stranger muttered something in what I think was Italian. I opened my eyes and saw a pale hand offering to help me up. I took it and was pulled face to face with a boy about my height, maybe an inch taller.
He was very pale, almost unhealthy looking. He had messy jet black hair that stood up just right. And his eyes were so dark they seemed black.
He was wearing a black T-shirt with a skull, dark jeans and black shoes. Even though his appearance may be intimidating, he seemed like a hot as hell Goth boy.
"Th-thanks." I stuttered. God I'm just pathetic!
"No problem. I'm Nico." He gave me a weak smile and held out his hand.
I shook it, ignoring the spark I got from touching him.
"I'm Ava. Are you new?"
"Yeah and I'm kinda lost can you help me?"
He handed me his schedule and looked over my shoulder. I felt like I was going to die right then and there. I looked at his schedule and squinted my eyes struggling to read it.
"Dyslexic?" He asked out of nowhere.
"Yeah. How did you know?" I asked with a shocked look on my face.
"I am too." He stated.
"Wow that's freaky. I think you have the same classes as me."
"Cool so I guess you're stuck with me all day. Maybe we'll be friends."
"Friends is so over used." I thought for a minute.
"Lets be super duper mega ultra extreme best friends!" I yelled maybe a little too loud.
Nico laughed a bit and nodded. Then the late bell rang.
"Come on we're late!" I dragged him by his hand all the way to class.
So that's how our beautiful friendship started. We started hanging out a lot and even had sleepovers at my house. My aunt Maria didn't mind as long as he slept on the floor. I live with my aunt because my dad died in the army when I was four. I only remember some good memories about him. I know that he was kind and brave.
Nico and I told each other all of our secrets. I told him about my mom who abandoned me when I was a baby. I even told him that I get the same nightmare over and over again every night. He told me about his sister Bianca who died when he was younger. He also told me about this guy named Percy he used to have a crush on.
I was really sad to hear this because I've had a ginormous crush on Nico from the first day I met him, but I accepted that he will never feel the same way. I was thinking about confessing to him today but I wasn't sure that I would have the guts to do it. We finally stopped walking and he took his hands off my eyes.
"Surprise." He said giving me little jazz hands.
We were in a beautiful meadow hidden by a forest. It had tall grass and wild flowers grew everywhere. The sun streamed in from in between the talk trees. There was even a family of rabbits living in an old log. I love the wilderness. And animals. My aunt says I get that from my mom. I turned around and Nico held up a basket and old blanket.
"Picnic?" He asked smiling.
I laughed and hugged him so tight he almost dropped the things in his hands.
"This is the best. Thanks Nico."
We laid down the blanket and I looked inside the basket. I squealed in delight when I saw that there were two bags of McDonald's inside. Before I met Nico, I never ever tried McDonald's. My aunt doesn't support fast food. Nico sneaked me some before and now I'm addicted. We dug in and I picked up a fry.
"Aren't we so fancy Mr. Di Angelo?" I said in a British accent.
"The fanciest Ms. Sanchez." He replied returning the accent.
We laughed and continued to eat. I reached into my bag for a napkin and I felt a box. I took it out and looked at Nico.
"What's this?" I asked.
He just shrugged smirking at me. I opened it and inside was a silver necklace that had half of a heart bejeweled with diamonds. It looked very expensive.
"Nico is this real?" He nodded.
"Do you like it?"
"Of course I like it! How on earth were you able to afford this?!"
He shrugged. "I know a guy."
Ok am I friends with a jewel thief or something?
"Who has the other half?" I asked.
He responded by lifting a chain on his neck. There was the other half of the heart. He scooted closer to me and connected the two pieces of hearts. They fit perfectly like pieces to a puzzle.
"Best friends forever right?" He asked looking at me.
"Till the end of times." I tackled him in a hug.
"This is the best birthday ever!"
He laughed and I looked up to see that I was face to face with him. I felt my cheeks get hot. I was so close to him. Only a few inches away. I need to tell him. I might've been imagining it but I thought that he was leaning closer.
"Nico I... I,"
"Ava get down!" He screamed suddenly. His dark eyes were widened in fear.
He rolled us over and pinned me to the ground.
"Ow what the fu-" Before I could say anymore a log went flying past our heads.
There was a loud roar-like noise. I turned my head and saw a half bull half man creature running towards us. How is that even possible?! I started to scream and Nico pulled me out of the way right before the beast trampled on us. It hit its head against a tree and stumbled a bit.
"Nico what the hell is that? You see it too right?! Am I imagining things?!"
"Ava I need you to run away as fast as you can and as far as you can!"
I saw a black sword in his hands. Where the hell did that come from?!
"Ava go now!"
I started running but I didn't know how to get out of the woods. I felt something cut my back. I screamed in pain and fell to the ground. I reached with my hand and slowly, pulled a knife out of my back. I couldn't get myself back up. I crawled and leaned against a tree. I looked towards Nico to see him get flung to a tree.
"Nico!" I screamed.
He didn't answer. I saw him trying to get up but the monster picked him up by his throat. I reached my hand out to him. Suddenly a blinding light burned my eyes. Something fell into my lap. I saw that it was a silver bow and arrow. I picked it up confused. I looked at Nico again. He was running out of air. I picked an arrow and launched it at the monster.
Surprisingly it hit it right in the back between it's shoulders and it turned into a golden dust dropping Nico who gasped for air. He ran to me and the bow and arrow disappeared. When he reached me there were tears in his eyes. I looked down and my shirt was covered in blood. My vision was starting to fade. Out of nowhere a boy with black hair and sea green eyes, and a girl with princess blonde curls and stormy gray eyes ran to us. The girl gave something to Nico and he poured it in my mouth. It tasted like my favorite drink. Chocolate milk. I felt really tired and Nico's screaming started to fade.
"Ava please keep your eyes open! Ava please keep......."
Darkness.
