CHAPTER THIRTY | away for the week★
Lucie stay three nights at Ada's house. Every morning she woke up to the smell of breakfast. On her last morning she arrived downstairs, and saw Ada sat at the kitchen table with Karl next to her.
"Karl, go say hello." Ada pointed to Lucie and Karl ran towards her.
"Hello handsome boy." Lucie cooed picking Karl up and spinning him round in the air earning a loud laugh which warmed her heart.
"Auntie Luce." Karl giggled as Lucie tickled him.
Ada, Lucie and Karl day at the table eating breakfast. Ada was getting ready to leave for work and Lucie was ready to surprise her parents.
"Mia, can you take Karl to nursery for me, I'm late for work." Ada shouted through the house.
"Ada, I'll gladly take Karl for you, it's no trouble." Lucie picked up Karl I'm tapped him on the nose.
Mia came rushing to the door looking for her coat. Lucie informed her that she would take Karl.
"Mia, sit down and have some food. Then go out, lock the door and spend the day doing what you like." Ada smiled and everyone left.
"Right Ada, it's been lovely seeing you. Please come up soon. I've really missed you, and little Karl too, hey?" Lucie laughed and pulled Ada in for a long hug.
"I'll try Luce. I'll try." Ada smiled and said her goodbyes to Lucie and Karl before walking towards her job.
"Right then Karl, time for nursery." Lucie smiled and held Karl in her arms tightly.
The walk to the nursery was enjoyable for both Lucie and Karl. She'd missed seeing him and Ada too. Lucie joked with Karl and bounced him up and down. Spinning him round and round. Any onlookers would've assumed the child was hers, since she cared for him like a mother would.
When they reached the nursery, which was a small home containing five children who were looked after by a group of women, a few no older than Lucie.
"Bye Bye Karl. I hope to see you soon. I won't be with your mummy when I get home. However, I hope to see you again soon." Lucie kisses the top of Karl's head and waved goodbye.
A young girl emerged and guided Karl inside. She smiled at Lucie and came towards her. She had her hair tied in a bun, her clothes were tattered but she still looked beautiful.
"Hi, I'm Rose. I don't think I've seen you before. You here to register your little 'en?" She had not a hint of a posh accent, but she sounded more like Lucie.
"No, no. I'm a friend of Karl's mother." Lucie smiled. "You wouldn't happen to know where Scott's Taylor's is?"
"Oh yes, down the way, and turn left. They make some pretty dresses there. Love walking past and looking at them. It's a shame, I'd love to have one. Nice green one in the window. You'd suit it." Rose smiled.
"Thank you. I'll be back here in half an hour or so, check up on Karl, will you answer the door? I'll knock four times." Lucie laughed and began to walk down the street.
When she turned the corner she saw her parents shops. Side by side. Bigger than she ever seen. She saw the green dress Rose was talking about.
When Lucie pushed the door open, a bell rang. Lucie remember that noise. How it used to ring five times in a row when her brothers would enter.
A young girl appeared from the door beside the counter. She looked sweaty yet pretty. Lucie had seen her before.
"Lucille? Is that really you?" The girl gasped.
"Lillian? Fuck off no way." Lucie ran towards her childhood best friend.
"You work for my parents?" Lucie smiled, wiping a tear from her cheek.
"They took me in. When you left, my parents died of pestellice. So they took me in." Lili smiled.
"I can't believe it." Lucie giggled.
"You're parents have gone out for ten minutes, should be back soon." Lili smiled.
"Right well. Help me with this." Lucie pointed to the green dress on display. "I met a girl, she looks after my friends child. Tattered clothes. She said she loves the dress in the window. I want to gift it to her. A thank you from me and Ada. I'll pay when I get back." Lucie pulled a face she hadn't pulled since she left Manchester. One she used when she needed help.
"Fine." Lili rolled her eyes and laughed.
The pair pulled the dress off it's hanger and folded it into a bag. Lucie smiled and told Lili not to tell her parents she was in Camden, since it was a surprise. And the she left.
Lucie walked hastily down the streets to reach the nursery, she turned left and the walked down the road. Reaching the home, she knocked on the door four times, as promised.
Rose opened the door with a smile.
"I don't know you, but you look after Karl for Ada. I know she appreciates it. So, I got you a little something to say thank you and on Ada's behalf too." Lucie smiled and pushed the bag into Roses hands.
"It's the dress, the green one. From Scott's Taylor's." Lucie smiled.
"How, what! I — I can't accept this." Rose stuttered.
"Oh, but you most. Ada has told me of the beautiful girl who has looked after Karl for so long." Lucie smiled.
"But it was so expensive." Rose laughed.
"Oh sorry, I haven't even introduced myself." Lucie stuck out her hand. "Lucie, Lucie Scott."
"Oh my. You're Marie's daughter. You're Ada's brothers wife." Rose smiled.
"Not quite wife." Lucie giggled.
"I can't thank you enough."
"You are deserving. It's only right. If you're ever in need. Just speak to my mother. Or Lili, she works there." Lucie smiled and left to go back to her parents shop.
She felt warm on the inside. She knew how much Rose appreciated the dress. She had looked after Karl ever since Ada moved to London.
When Lucie arrived back in the shop the bell rang once more. But this time, Lili didn't come to the desk, instead it was a man. A shocked man.
"No. No." The man removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes, before replacing his glasses once more.
"She's back! Marie! Marie! She's back." Her father shouted. He ran past the counter and engulfed Lucie into a tight hug, letting tears fall from his eyes.
"No way." Lucie heard her mother's voice coming from behind the counter.
She felt another pair of arms wrap around her. She'd missed them so much.
