CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN | get out of town, kid

Lucie woke up to the feeling of someone peppering her face with kisses. It was Tommy, in a loving attempt to wake her up.

"Gosh, you're really going the whole nine yards with this aren't you." Lucie giggled.

"There will be a point where I close myself off involuntarily. So whilst I can I'm showing you". Thomas whispered. "I hate to break this up, but, family meeting." Tommy clicked his tongue and kissed Lucie before beginning to get up and get dressed.

"Well, aren't you going to get ready? We've got fifteen minutes." Thomas urged.

"What? I'm coming?" Lucie questioned, shocked.

"You're practically family, Luce. Now hurry up."

Lucie fell straight back onto the bed, pulling the covers over her body. Which were then ripped from her, earning a shriek to fall from her lips.

"Tommy, it's fucking freezing!"

"Well get up, and get dressed. You've got five minutes." He replied, urging her along.

Lucie reluctantly got up and began to make herself look presentable. She didn't want to. But she did.

The walk to the betting shop was relatively quiet until Lucie finally blurred out something that played on her mind.

"What did Grace's letter say?" Lucie blurted, immediately regretting it.

Lucie saw Thomas' jaw clench, she knew it was a subject she needed to approach with care. She had a letter too.

"Burnt it." He replied sharply.

"Good." Was all Lucie replied.

The rest of the walk was silent, Lucie would glance over at Thomas, who never looked back. Instead his eyes fixated on the path ahead.

After what felt like an hour of uncomfortable silence they finally reached the familiar green door. Thomas walked in first, not bothering to see if Lucie was behind him, she wasn't.

Instead she rad down the wet cobbles towards Arthur and John who seemed to be play fighting, erupting in fits of laughter.

"Arthur, John what the fuck are you two doing?" Lucie giggled watching them.

"Am taking her hostage." John shouted running straight for Lucie.

A shrill shriek left Lucie's lips as John lifted her over his shoulder. Lucie laughed and kicked, giggling all the way to Polly's home.

"Get out of town kid, or I will shoot your fucking head off." John shouted as he entered Polly's home, not bothering to knock.

"Times up. Give me the hostage." Arthur imitated shooting John in the head, although everyone else had seen who was in the room. Well everyone besides Lucie and Arthur.

"John, your dead go down." Arthur exclaimed.

"John, would you fucking put me down already?" Lucie shouted, immediately being lowered by John.

She flattened her skirt and turned to see the boy she'd once knew beside his mother. Lucie couldn't stop herself, she ran towards him and embraced him tightly, tears brimming in her eyes.

"Oh, Cheeky, I've missed you!" Lucie whispered, holding him tight.

"I never forgot you, Lou." Micheal replied, a smile resting on his face.

Lucie broke the hug and wiped her tears, apologising to Polly for her sudden outburst. Lucie didn't move over to Thomas, instead she moved back to John and Arthur, leaning against Arthur. She knew it was petty. But she was giving him a taste of his own medicine.

"Alright then, Polly." Arthur snickered, "Who's this?"

Lucie slapped Arthur in his chest, causing him to wrap an arm round Lucie an mess up her hair with his hand.

Thomas walked forward, taking a drag from his cigarette. A small smile played on his lips.

"Gentlemen, this is your cousin, Polly's son Michael." He announced.

Michael moves to shake the men's hands, smiling at Lucie as he did.

"I'm Arthur, you've already met me, I used to throw you out the window for John to catch you." He stated

"I'm John, I used to put you in a box and kick you down Watery Lane." John looked down at his feet.

Lucie hid her smiles. She felt elated, like a ten year old again, seeing Michael brought it out of her.

"It's okay, all I remember is the day they took me away." Michael smiled slightly before letting it drop.

Lucie could see how thankful Polly was to have her child back in her arms. What Lucie would give to have her child in her arms right now. Lucie looked down to her stomach, placing her hand there feeling the emptiness appear once more.

Thomas looked towards his girlfriend to see her actions, he saw the pain and sorrow in her eyes. He felt it too, his child. God had taken his little baby away.

"Let's leave him be for now, eh?" Thomas stated, walking towards Lucie.

"Come on, Love, we can come back later." Thomas spoke softly.

Lucie moved towards Michael and wrapped her arms around him once more, burying her head in his chest, remembering when she was taller than him.

"Love you, Cheeky." Lucie whispered.

"Love you too, Luce." Michael laughed.

Lucie moved back to Thomas who was waiting for her by the door. She looked back once more and waved a quick goodbye to the reunited mother and son. Thomas had already walked out of the door and thrown his cigarette to the cobbles.

"Thomas what are we go—." Lucie was cut off when Thomas hastily wrapped his arms around his girlfriend.

"It's gonna be fine, we're gonna be fine. I know you're sad now Polly's son is here. I know you wish you were carrying ours. But it'll be okay." Thomas spoke into her hair, ending with a small kiss to her forehead.

Lucie looked up into Tommy's eyes and saw tears filling them, never spilling. Yet making his icy eyes sparkle. She'd never seen these emotions on him before.

"You live me now, Luce. I won't let you be away anymore." Thomas smiled.

Lucie felt so appreciated, even though she still blamed herself for what happened he made her feel appreciated.

"We make each other strong." Thomas smiled and lent down to connect Lucie's lips in his.
