"Detective Chang. We got her." "What do you mean you got her? She's right here."
"Wow. You really look like her. If it wasn't for your haircut I would have thought it was you instead." The unidentified man said.
"You're free to go."
I made it out just as the unnamed woman walked in. The similarities were uncanny. I quickly looked away when she caught me staring.
Dopplegangers aren't supposed to ever meet.
_______________________It's the little things in life that make you grateful that you are alive.
The beautiful stars in the evening sky... And the simple fact that you're not in jail, or you're not dead.
And right now I wish I was in jail.
I was that one kid in high school that used every excuse in the book to ditch sports so naturally, running through the alleys, my mind tries - and fails to make quick and elaborate escape plans.
I quickly run down an ally and make my way to a newly constructed road.
I see a bright yellow sign on it's left and ignore it. I probably should have read it.
I'm starting to gain momentum and focus when I skid to a halt.
One more step and I'd have been badly hurt. This was obviously an incomplete road. That was supposed to link this gorge to the next.
The underway current was flowing at a near-high speed.
"Hey Missy, missy. Give us what's in the pocket." I'd made the mistake of unraveling Experiment BT6789, without looking behind first. The bright whitish-bluish hue had caught the attention of the wrong people.
So I ran. Hoping to lose them. All those times I spent watching NCIS made me think gangs were slow and stupid idiots.
I laugh.
I carefully stuck it back inside. And slowly moved back.
"Alright. Alright. Just take it easy. I'll hand it to you in a moment." I said, trying to ease the situation.
The leader grinned and took a step forward. He obviously didn't believe me.
"I'm not stupid. You ran for almost 15 blocks. Just to make sure we didn't get whatever that is. And that's the only reason why I want it." His smile had gone by the time he finished talking. He signaled his cronies to take it from me.
So I did what any normal person would do.
I quickly ran to the end of the gorge and I jumped.
The descent downwards was exactly what I imagined it. It was fast and confusing.the rush of air around me stole the breath from my lungs and all I could do was wait. I braced myself for impact.
The moment I hit the water. I felt so relieved. So at peace. But that came forth with a new problem.
I needed to breathe. The water seemed to pull me under. As soon as I thought it was all over. I felt the stream push me upwards. There has never been a gulp of air that has ever left me thinking, "Wow."
I somehow ended up on the banks of the stream. I lay there for a while. Still processing what just happened in the last couple of months.
I got accused of attempted murder, then I stole classified technology. All to end up on this Earth. Then I ended up homeless. And got picked up for suspected drug dealing. A gang chased me for 15 blocks because they saw a shiny box. And I might as well have killed myself when I jumped on a cliff.
Wow. Brilliant just brilliant.
Tonight is the last night I'm going to spend as a homeless deadbeat.
That's when I remembered a very interesting news headline.
"Anthropocene, the sixth extinction has become a reality. Last week, the world's last tiger died. Mr Khan, the minister of Environmental Affairs says the country is doing all it can to save..."
I knew exactly what I was going to do.
