For Caroline Matthews, life had never been particularly easy. Her parents were never any way affectionate with her, for Christs sake they had barley given her the time of day. They made it perfectly clear to her that she was but an inconvenient stain on their previously perfect lives.

They weren't exactly present either. They would leave for weeks on end for business trips, not informing the poor young girl, sometimes leaving her with a measly $25 to help her get by in their absence.

The longest stretch of time they had left was a month and a half. It would've been longer only that Carolines' aunt Jennifer had decided to drop into town as a surprise, finding the ten year old all alone and then proceeding to flip her shit.

This brought on a rather lengthy custody battle which ultimately led to her life being more or less completely uprooted and moving in with her aunt in Derry, Maine.

The ironic thing about the situation being, Carolines' aunt worked quite a bit, so she spent the majority of her time with her next door neighbour, Mrs Kaspbrak, and her son Eddie who she actually got along quite nicely with.

He was more or less her first proper friend ever. She had never been that popular, especially in Derry with all those rumours flying around about her which involved Cs' on papers and stabbing teachers.

She liked the idea of having friends, the idea of someone paying attention to you and liking almost everything about you. But no one seemed to want to fulfill these ideas she liked so much in her new school, besides Eddie that is.

And due to the fact that Eddie had his own group of friends; which he was adamant on keeping Caroline away from for whatever strange reasoning, Caroline spent a lot of her time alone. Usually in her room, but sometimes when the weather was nice she would venture out into the woods near the quarry.

She knew that if Aunt Jenny or Mrs Kaspbrak were to find out she would be in a world of trouble but she just really enjoyed sitting there all peaceful, sometimes reading, other times listening to her cassettes and taking in the scenery.

And you'd think with all that she has been through she would be bitter and detached from everyone; but in reality, Caroline Matthews is one of the most genuine and sweet people you would ever come across in your entire life.

She has this child-like innocence to her; shining through whenever she failed to understand the overtly sexual comments Patrick Hockstetter would make towards her. and how she pretended Greta Bowie wasn't that bad.

And perhaps this innocence made her an easy target for manipulation and violence, but she didn't even notice. At this stage she was so alone she was grateful for any bit of human interaction she had with  anyone who wasn't Mrs Kaspbrak, Eddie or her aunt.

But, this summer would be different, everything was going to change by the time September rolled around she would basically be a brand new person. She would have more  amazing friends than she could have dreamed of an she would feel more loved than she has in her entire life.

Or at least that's what she kept telling Mrs Kaspbrak.
