Flashes of their life together thus far sped through Wooyoung's mind.

Wooyoung had first met Yeosang on a hot summers day. The weather was dry and terrible and it made Wooyoung's school clothes stick heavily to his body. Wooyoung had snuck out of school at lunch time desperate for a place to cool down. He couldn't bare roasting in the sun, and he dreaded the thought of returning to the stinking hot classroom once lunch was finished. He felt like he was in prison.

So Wooyoung had taken his bright red bike, snuck out, and rode just out of town to the river stream that he knew would provide him with relief from this stinking hot day.

He took cover under the bridge, knowing that it would provide shelter both from the sun, demons and any passersby, who would surely drag him by the ear back to school condemning him to detention. Wooyoung knew he was putting himself in danger if a demon attacked, at that point he'd barely been trained and he to put in bluntly would be screwed if he were to come face to face with one. Game over. Bye, Bye Wooyoung.

But Wooyoung didn't care, the summer sun had scrambled his mind.

Wooyoung stripped to his boxers and dived into the water. Relief hitting him immediately. What he didn't expect though when he came back out of the water was to see another boy standing there looking at him.

That boy was Yeosang.

The pair had simply swam around each other, but eventually they had began talking. About random things like school, the weather, demons and how to slay them, simple things.

They discovered they went to the same school, and realised the reason they had never seen each other before was because they were a year apart and hung out in completely different areas. Wooyoung choosing the basketball courts and Yeosang the library.

It would be two whole years before their soul marks appeared. In between the two boys friendships blossomed, they quickly became best friends and before school, recess, lunch, after school, most weekends and holidays they spent in each other's presence.

Like everyone else receiving your mark happens suddenly and out of the blue. Sometimes you could predict your soulmate and other times it came unexpected. For Wooyoung finding out that Yeosang was his soulmate was shocking

It happened during PE. Everyone was paired up for mock battles. Wooyoung held a rubber dagger which he went to swipe at his sparring partner. He stopped just before reaching their side though, as a sudden tingling feeling erupting under the skin of his right wrist.

Wooyoung had looked down and although he knew and suspected what was happening it was still terrifying to look at. A lace work of silver ribbons coursed and wiggled around on Wooyoung's skin. It was like he had silver worms and for a second Wooyoung thought maybe he'd been attacked by some sort of worm demon.

His class had swarmed him watching the silver worms form into an elegant lacework arrow beneath his skin. He was the first in his year to receive his soul mark.

His teacher had told him to stay calm, and despite Wooyoung's protests in wanting to follow his newly appeared compass his teacher insisted he had to finish PE class first. His teacher also advised him that his soulmate might not even go to his school so it would be useless looking now.

As soon as the end of the day came (PE was his last class for that day) Wooyoung had shot out to find Yeosang and show him his new mark, most of his class tagging along out of curiosity. What he didn't expect though was for Yeosang to appear with his own onlookers and present him with his own mark.

Both boys held their marks side by side, their arrows pointing at each other. They very quickly realised they were each other's soul mate and they couldn't be happier. They hugged each other and everyone clapped around them.

The boys were pulled out of mainstream school and sent to a training school simply known as 'The Academy'. Yeosang was bumped up a class so he and Wooyoung would be in the same year.

The academy was their new residence and to Wooyoung and Yeosang they were each other's home and safety. They shared a room, they trained together, learnt about the world around them together.

The boys had a solid friendship, but their friendship got confusing as they got older and learnt what true soul mates were to each other. A soul mate wasn't just a perfect pairing , it was your perfect match romantically.

Wooyoung loved Yeosang of course very deeply and although it was in his primal nature, in his genes, in every fibre of his being to care for Yeosang in a romantic way. He forever tried to deny that fact.

It was unfortunate for Yeosang, who wanted that true soulmate life, as Wooyoung's denial for his love for Yeosang in a romantic way kept them apart. Wooyoung always insisted that they were just best friends, not lovers, that's how they started out and that's how Wooyoung wanted them to always be. So Yeosang just had to accept that even if it did break his heart.
