"Kaia!" I heard my roommate's voice calling out from the kitchen. My head hurt so bad that I couldn't force myself to open my eyes. Yesterday we were celebrating Katey's eighteenth birthday even though she wasn't looking forward to it.

Today we will be attending an exam to get into the Academy. It will help us gain the necessary skills needed in this new life of ours. AIthough, I would rather stay in bed than go and learn stuff I won't use anytime soon.

"Kaia! For fuck sake, you will be late for our exam day!" Katey came in. Her ginger hair tied up in a ponytail, huge grey eyes were furiously staring in my direction. Sometimes she's trying to be the 'Mom' but to be honest, Katey is as lazy and confused as I am.

"I don't want to go Katey. I don't care." I yawned and pulled the covers up. Not even a second later, I was dragged out of my bed forcefully. Katey stood there; her eyes focused on me, her fingers bent in the opposite direction.

"Could you not use your telekinesis on me?" I asked while rolling my eyes. She could move stuff with her mind. Not heavy ones, she wasn't skilled enough, but that's why we are going to pass the exam and study. We studied the basics in college, and we're ready to tinker our abilities in the Academy.

"Then get up and get ready." She whispered angrily and released her telekinesis from me. "Fifteen minutes." She stated while leaving me laying on the floor.

I got up while grabbing a pair of jeans and a grey hoodie; I rushed towards the toilet and began my morning routine by washing my face. A lot changed since the 'Apocalypse'. Many people thought they died and well, some of them did. However, I could proudly say that I survived, somehow. Few months after they gathered all the people from California together, we found out no one who was at least one kilometre away from the lightning strike had survived, yet I stood there, alive, crying my eyes out. Somewhere deep down, I knew I wasn't the only kid who lost their parents, but how would that make it any better? We still missed them.

Then I met Katherine Blake. She was the same age as me, also lost her parents; she was alone. We became best friends almost immediately. I'm not going to lie, I felt that our meeting was a blessing ever since everything went crazy months before. We were informed the whole world had been affected by the lighting and soon almost everyone on the planet began to show some strange abilities. For example, telekinesis in Katey's case or being having inhuman strength, shooting acid, shape-shifting into animals, creating objects out of nothing, the ability to communicate with animals and many, many more. The percentages of supernaturals multiplied fast. Around 8 years ago, 6 years after the 'Apocalypse' almost 75% of the world population had supernatural abilities.

The army decided it was best to sent some of the orphans to different countries around the world where there were still people who had free space to take care of them. We were soon transported to UK where the British army took us under their wings and raised us with other kids.

Approximately 2 to 3 years after that, most of the towns around the world were rebuilt. With the powers, it wasn't that hard. The government and army took a good care of orphans. Starting with education. They sent them to schools, colleges and the university if needed. There was, a particular one called 'Magnus - Academy for Gifted.' Only people with enhanced potential could go there. Why? To later become great Protectors. The Academy's programme contains five classes to help people develop their powers and teach them every possible thing about themselves. Sun, class consisting of prophecy, it's similar to history with a slight difference; we are researching the purpose of our powers, and it's possible historical origins. Moon, lessons about hunting. If we want to find villains, we need to learn how to hunt them down. Mercury, a class for messengers. We are trained to pass on necessary information to people with more prominent authority. Mars, teachings about war and tactics. They won't educate fools, only strong, independent people who know what pain means. Finally, at the very end Saturn, class of agriculture. It helps us learn about how our world works currently, who provides food and how. Later on, we can choose the career based on the points we got from each of the classes.
