she'd learned how to use makeup fairly well in the past three years. she always got compliments on how beautiful she could make her plain brown eyes look. and even better, not one person ever saw a bruise on her skin.
she would wake up every morning at five forty five so she could make herself presentable for school. she cared deeply about her looks, but not in the way most did. she just didn't want anyone to question anything about her home life.
she grabbed her backpack and threw it across her shoulder and tiptoed down the stairs. she kissed her mother on the cheek and headed outside to her car, making sure not to turn the headlights on until she got to the corner so she knew for sure she wouldn't wake up her father.
hunter was the last person anyone ever expected to have the home life she did. she was beautiful, she was rich, her mother was a psychiatrist, and her father was the best attorney in orlando. their family hosted huge philanthropist events for various charities. jonathan and kimberly sutton were the most known names around the city. and their perfect angels for daughters, hunter and heather, were just as famous in orange county.
however, once the family got home, jonathan ripped off his tie and grabbed a bottle of fireball. his anger was explosive. kimberly could never do a thing to stop him, or else, she would face the wrath of his right hand. hunter and heather were typically the punching bags, mainly hunter, with her being the only one home most of the time due to heather being away at university. but, the two of them learned ways to cover up the evidence, and they went along with their daily lives.
heather was attending full sail university, and she was staying on campus, so hunter was the only child around the house. she was your average high school junior, an a/b student. she played volleyball in the fall, and in the spring, she ran track. she had her friends, and on the weekends, she'd stay at their houses to get a little escape from the home problems.
hunter was walking to her locker, as she did every morning after arriving at school, with her friend marleigh by her side.
"so, i have a date this weekend," marleigh grinned to her friend. hunter rolled her eyes and laughed, as marleigh always had a different boy on her arm. "don't laugh! i really like this one."
"who is it?" hunter asked.
"calum hood."
"he's a senior, right?"
marleigh nodded. "but, there's a condition."
"and what's that?" hunter furrowed her eyebrows.
"i need a favor from you, hunter."
hunter closed her locker door. "what?"
"he has a friend coming. and he asked me to bring someone for him."
hunter hesitated. "i don't know, marls.."
"come on! it'll be fun! he's super cute, too."
"what's his name?"
"ashton irwin."
ashton irwin. he'd taken heather out on a date once, when she was a senior and he was a junior, and all hunter could remember was heather returning home, red in the face about how he'd tried to get her to leave so they could fuck in his car after fifteen minutes. he was now a senior, and much like marleigh, he had a new girl by his side everyday.
"i don't know. he went out with heather once.. don't you think that'd be weird?"
marleigh stuck out her bottom lip. "pleeeaaase, hunter. you don't have to go out with him anymore, just do it for me. i really like calum."
hunter thought for a moment. maybe marleigh was right.. she didn't have to see ashton again. she also owed marleigh for every time she let hunter stay over to get away from her family. so, reluctantly, hunter nodded.
"fine, i'll tell mom."
marleigh squealed and squeezed her neck tightly. "i love you to death. i'll text you and let you know the plans. i'll see you later."
hunter smiled and waved. "sounds good, marls. see you later."
and hunter headed off to chemistry with ashton irwin stuck on her mind.
