" get outta here you dirty street rat! " the elderly man bellowed and kicked over a trash can. The hot bread scotched my skin but i continued to run at my break neck speed.
The old man was easy to trick once i started to talk to him and distract him from the cooling bread he had set out on the crumbling stairs. His ageing wife, obvious of his perverted intentions starting to hit him with the now empty bread pan. I snickered and tucked the hot bread more securely in my battered leather jacket.
I sauntered past the city gate and gave George the new gates-men a sassy salute and stepped out of the walled city of Vega and into the vast desert of Vega, or as it was formerly known as " las Vages ' before the fall of humanity.
Vega was a decent city, about eight hundred people lived within its protective walls of 100ft of cement. In most spots the wall was only constructed of welded metal and stone barricades.out of the six main Western cities, Vega(lasvegas), Rado(Colorado),Daho(Idaho), Angeles(losangeles), Zona(Arizona), and Nix(Phoenix), Vega was probably the most zombie active.
I laughed as i pulled my dusty black dirt bike out of its hiding place beneath some dry scraggly bushes and threw my leg over and kicked the machine to life beneath me. Most would kill for a working form of transportation, and i piratically did.
I stole it from a sand gang member after he tried to feel me up at a local market. I kicked him in the balls and jacked his bike for compensation, i haven't seen that sand gang member since. However, most don't want a bike because of the sound.........it attracts the attention of the undead monsters.
But, its a price I'm willing to pay since i live in a grocery store with an apartment on top about eleven miles outside of Vega.
Of course we made some major changes to the store to zombie proof it. The store was such a great steal, it was right off the highway and the store was on top of an old irrigation system tunnel that led five streets over to a water let out that we had ridged with a metal bar gate to keep the let out zombie free.
Me and my friends managed to weld metal sheets over all the windows and reinforced the doors on the first floor by welding thick sheets of metal together and rolling them in front of the doors and knocking them into place over the doors and installing a security system that we had running on the generator in the basement.
The store wasn't much, but we made it home and kept each other safe, The housed around the store had long been ransacked, so we mostly lived out here alone with the stray traveler or vampire hunter squatting in a house for a few nights.
I switched my bike off and rolled it into the shed me and my cousin had made beside the store for when we couldn't bring the bikes inside. I went around the store to the back and pulled the string by the wall and the wooden ladder tumbled down.
We tended to keep the lower level locked up at all times, unless we knew we would be coming and going all day. I gave the ladder a firm tug and quickly climbed the 26ft to the wooden platform we built onto the second floor apartment of the store and re-rolled the rope and put it back in its place and typed in the short code on the keypad by the door and waited for the click and pulled the door open.
I had barely shut the door before i was tackled by two large huskeys and a twelve year old boy! " Nikko! Nalla , Naru. get off me! " i laughed and pushed the dogs down to pinch the blond, blue eyed kids face. Nikko swatted my hands away and pulled Nalla with him into the small kitchen.
An itchy feeling in my jacket reminded me that had food to give to the little monster. Nikko stopped playing with the dogs and sniffed the air, ha! he knew i had food! "Gimme Gimme " he laughed and playfully lunged at me.
This kid was so innocent, and the center of our groups world. The kid was only twelve, but he had already witnessed the cruelty of this world when he watched in horror as his mother and father were eaten alive. You see, every one living in the store, once lived in Vega. However, we lost loved ones because the city wasn't as safe as we had thought, an that false sense of security had gotten our families killed.
I laughed an gallantly pulled the two loafs of bread out of my jacket and presented them to Nikko and saw the delight thst crossed the boys face, over bread! Such a simple happiness over food.
" Yeah, have at it you punk, but save some for the rest of us " i said and was already crossing our small living room to my room....errrr... well its actually more of a small storage room, there was enough room for a small air mattress and a plastic tote to put my clothes in.
I purposly picked this "room" because the stores apartment only had three rooms and five people were living here. I slid the sliding door open then shut behind me and lit a few candle to light my dark room. Even though we had a generator for electricity, we sparingly used it, we mostly used it for the fridge and the small TV we had in the living room.
The generator is gas fueled and that was something we didn't have a lot of, even though we drained as many cars on the highway as we could, we are still having to go farther out to get gas for the generator and the bikes!
The room danced with shadows from the candles, giving the room a magical feeling. I kicked off my dusty clothes and put on a fresh pair of jeans and a long sleeved shirt and pulled my combat boots back on. The only real plus to the Apocalypse is that there are alot of clothes to pick from and find left over from people who evacuated or were killed off.
Our store was near a large suburb area and an old wild life park on the outer city limits of " Las Vegas ", farther away from the governors " Palace ". With each city there is one dictator, or a Governor to take lead of all the people living within the city and reporting to one of the six prices. Complicated, i know. You think that after the fall of humanity the government would go all to hell.
But, i reality the country thrived after the outbreak. After the out break, many died, but the remaining humans banded together and constructed the cities to keep the undead ans infected out.
The government was less of a democracy and more of a monarchy, the laws has changed and some disappeared all together, each prince was responsible for a certain amount of cities and controlled how they worked, the taxes and the penalty, including death. The times had changed and the world had changed with it.
The reaming humans were striving to take back their home, no matter what the government was, or wasn't like. A loud thump jarred me from my thoughts as i straightened my shirt, i frowned. I crossed the small room and stuck my head out into the hallway, spike , one of my roommates and friend was quietly leaving his room. i squinted into the dark and saw that he had his guns on his hips! He was planing to go out!
" Were are you going Spike! "
i growled and jumped at him, he let out a girly a girly yelp and fell against the wall. For an eighteen year old boy, Spike sure was a jumpy baby. His white-blond hair was pinned back with a few bobby pins and his bright green eyes were wide from surprise. He frowned once he saw me
" Damn girl, you almost gave me a heat attack " he laughed and went to move down the hall, but i grabbed his shirt and pulled him back
" answer the question Spike" i growled.
He didn't ,meet my gaze, but held out a crumpled piece of paper and let me see it. I cursed and shoved him away in anger " Ever....." spike whined, but i was already walking away from him. " Ever, wait. Tyler and Cameron already went, i was supposed to go get them on the quad1 " Spike said as he gripped my arm. I cant believe they went and did that behind my back.
I spun on Spike and shoved him away again and stormed to my room, slamming the screen shut behind me. I grabbed my Swords and put them the belt i had fashioned to sheath them at my hips. I had found the Swords when i was fourteen in an old house that must have belonged to a weapons collector because there were relics every where in the abandoned house.
I quickly tied up my hair and left my room, storming past spike and out the door. Tyler and Cameron had made a stupid mistake, and now i had to fix there mistake and knock some sense into them,
