I stood there watching in awe at how talented Luke was. He seemed like a completely different person compared to when I had talked to him. He was smiling and seemed as happy as can be. Without noticing it, I shifted my weight snapping a twig underneath my shoe. It caught Luke's attention, him quickly looking up and noticing me. His expression changed and then he started questioning me.

"How long have you been there!?" He was definitley not happy I had seen him.

"Um a few minutes."

"Oh my god! You weren't supposed to hear that!. No one was supposed to hear that!"

"I'm sorry. Okay? It was so good I couldn't resist. Your really talented too."

"I don't care what you think. I'm leaving!"

"Wait! At least we both know something about eachother now."

"You don't know anything about me!"

He seemed to be really angry when I just gave him compliments. I also didn't know if I should tell Ellie or Grace about it.

While walking back to the main camp I saw Ellie come running toward me.

"Oh my gosh! I just saw Luke crying and running off!" She said. "Do you know what happened?"

I decided to keep Luke's secret talent and or fight to myself. "Uh no. I didn't hear about that."

"Ok well that happened. Do you want to come swimming with Grace and I before lunch?"

I didn't really want to go swimming but I didn't want to dwell on what happened with Luke either so I decided to go. "Yeah sure! I'll come."

"Great! Just put your bathing suit on and we'll meet you on the beach."

----

I was walking down the path to the beach when I spotted Grace and Ellie. Grace had a surf board tucked under her arm and Ellie was smiling as usual. I didn't see Ellie with a board so I assumed I wasn't the only one not surfing.

"Hey Hayden! You ready to catch some waves?" said Grace.

"What? No! I don't know how to surf! Ellie you don't have a board."

"I'm going to help Grace teach you! You can't cone to a beach camp and not know how to surf!"

I reluctantly agreed, telling them I didn't want to go out very far and continuously asking about sharks. We walked out a couple yards into the water before Grace set the board down in the water. She told me to hop on while Ellie held it steady. I carefully stepped on laying my belly on the board. They then explained how to stand up and told me to try without any waves coming. I slowly and steadily did what they told me too before rushing back down to the board.

"Are you ready to try, now?" asked Ellie.

"No! I'm teriffied. Please can we just go back to the beach?"

"Nope not until you catch your first wave." replied Grace.

"Okay fine. I guess I'm ready."

Grace and Ellie were standing on either side of the board keeping it steady. After a few seconds of waiting Ellie started screaming "PADDLE! PADDLE!" I paddled my heart out before I heard Grace say "Try standing up." While wobbling as much as humanly possible I got up on one knee, then in one push I went to standing. Within 2 seconds I felt gravity pulling me toward the water and off the board. SPLASH! I hit the water and went under. I quickly popped up to hear my new friends cheering for me.

"You stood up on your first try!" yelled Grace.

"Your a natural!" said Ellie.

"I was only up for a few seconds but sure!" Grace and Ellie than followed me in toward the beach. When we reached the beach I was actually really excited that I had done it. I had just caught my first wave. I grabbed my backpack pulling out my phone to check the time.

"It's almost noon we should probably meet the group for lunch."

"Ok. Meet ya guys up there." Replied Grace.

I grabbed my stuff and followed Grace up to Main Camp. When we got to the tables I set my stuff down and got my food. While walking back I noticed Luke sitting by himself away from the rest of the group. I wanted to sit with Grace and Ellie but something told me to go sit down next to Luke. I picked my bag up from where I left it and walked over to Luke. I tried to sit down without him noticing me but that didn't really work. He heard me coming and looked up.

"I don't want to talk to you." He said.

"I'm not going to say anything about your music. I promise. I'm really sorry I was listening. I didn't know you didn't want people listening."

"Well I don't want people listening and you shouldn't have snuck up on me like that."

"Again. I'm sorry. Can we just try to be friends since we're doing this entire project together?" Luke didn't seem like a bad guy at all. He was just a little shy. I was usually really shy too, so I was surprised I had made two friends already. Maybe Luke just needed a friend.

Just like he had read my mind he said. "Stop trying to be my friend or something. I have friends. You don't need to be one of them."

"Hey! I was just trying to be nice. We have to do this project even if you don't want to be friends so stop acting like you can't be kind to anyone!" I was really frustrated by then so I just grabbed my stuff and went to go sit with Grace and Ellie.

"What was all that about?" Asked Ellie.

"Luke. He is being a jerk. According to you that's nothing new, but he just acts mean for no reason. It's kind of weird."

"Yeah Luke is like that. You just have to ignore it I guess." Said Grace.

"I keep telling myself 'Why are you even trying to be nice to him?' but I keep getting pulled back to him. I guess something is wrong with me too."

Before Grace or Ellie could reply Jeff got everyones attention. He asked everyone to share what they learned about their partner. This couldn't be good. Whrn Jeff got to me I didn't know what to say. Everyone else had actually learned something, surprisingly.

"Um... I didn't..." My shyness was coming out.

"Yes, Hayden?

"I didn't learn anything."

"Uh okay. Well pleas try a little harder on the next task and tell your partner to open up a bit." Jeff seemed dissapointed but I hadn't done anything wrong. Luke was just making me more mad.

When Luke's turn came around his answer shocked me.

"What did you learn about your partner, Luke?" Asked Jeff.

I a quiet voice he said "I learned that Hayden loves to film. She'll film anything she finds interesting and she carries her camera everywhere." He said this like it was something evryone should know.

I was stunned that he had actually remembered what I said. Even though it was only yesterday, at least I knew that he was listening. Maybe there was still a little hope for getting closer to Luke. When everyone was done Jeff announced that the first camp dance was that night. I was excited to have a distraction from Luke.
