Paolo, in thanks for getting his limbs reattached, had insisted on (forced) Will and Nico into getting out of camp and to a nice park and hiking trail nearby.

Will was delighted. Nico was annoyed.

They walked for a while, taking in the scenery and watching out for monsters or fellow mythological beings, and Nico even started to enjoy it. At least Will thought so, since every time he suggested leaving Nico said "nO", and quickened his pace.

The couple had just stopped by a food truck, hoping to get an egg sandwich for lunch, when Nico stopped walking and froze, as if he heard something and then was paralyzed. (Pro tip, don't do it, it's not fun.)

"Something's wrong. There's death in the air. I smell it."

Usually, if you heard your significant other say something like this you would ask them to lie down and call a therapist. But Will and Nico were not your normal couple. They probably got some weird looks after Will said "Where?" After Nico's phrase, but this was serious. If a son of Hades says that, somebody's in danger.

Nico broke into a sprint and headed back into the forest with Will following close behind. They ran farther into the trees into an opening of grass. There was nothing there.

"What? There should be something here, I can feel it. Thanatos is very close."

"HELP! SOMEBODY!?", a child's voice echoed from the trees across the grassy area.

Nico and Will raced towards the voice. The cries for help got louder, more desperate.

A young boy, maybe six or seven, was sitting with a woman's head on his lap, not far away from a hiking trail. "Help my momma.", the boy pleaded.

The woman was unconscious, with no visible injuries, and looked about 28. The boy's mother.

Will rushed toward the woman, checking her pulse and pupils, scanning over her for injuries. Nico slowly pulled the boy away from his mother and tried to calm him down, make sure he was ok.

"Mommy said her stomach hurt and she was cold and then fell asleep."
"Does she have a baby in her tummy?," asked Nico, already one step ahead Will.
"No," said he boy, "but she fell over onto the kitchen table a long time ago. We were eating peas and chicken. They were yummy. We went to the doctor and she got all better."
"Did she have something sharp? ", Will asked. The boy didn't respond. He wouldn't say anything.

Will had to use a cell phone to call 911, so Nico kept the boy close while he watched for monsters.

"We need an ambulance sent to our location. We're on hike trail B in Hamilton Park, through the clearing by the food trucks. We have an unconscious woman found with her little boy, pupils barely responsive, pulse 110." Will paused.
Fast pulse?
Shock symptom.
Cold?
Shock symptom.
Unconscious and barely responsive?
Shock symptom.
Will thought back to what the boy had said. The woman fell onto a counter (possibly with a sharp object) and then went to the doctor to get "all better." She ate before that, or at least fed the boy, which might've worsened her injury and the doctor couldn't catch it.
He pulled the woman's shirt up to reveal her stomach. A huge bruise was forming over the entire surface.
Internal bleeding.
"The patient has internal bleeding from an unchecked wound in her abdomen. She needs a hospital immediately and blood."
When the paramedics arrived, Will gave a full medical description of the patient and what he had done to help. He and the paramedics worked together and stabilized the woman before arranging a way to get the boy to safety, who had been hugging Nico's leg ever since the call.

The first thing the woman saw when she woke up in a hospital bed was a goth-y looking boy and one that looked like the sunny care bear talking to her son. The blond one looked over at the woman and, realizing she was awake, ushered the goth, who was holding her son's hand, over to her.
The boy hugged his mom, and the two teens both smiled simultaneously. Will and Nico kept in touch with the woman, Lillian, and her son, Johnny. And when Johnny was claimed as a son of Apollo when he was 13, the entire camp immediately took both mother and son in as family. Lillian was so grateful for the help, and the duo were a family Will and Nico would never forget in a million years.
