William went to meet with Philip at his job. "Philip, you're not even listening!" he told him, to which Philip replied "I hear you loud and clear, Will!" "Then why don't you say something?" "'Cause I don't wanna hurt your feelings. You're my buddy, my pal, my best friend!" Philip said.

"Womb to tomb?" Will asked him. "Birth to earth!" Philip replied. William then said "That's why you gotta come to the ball tonight and stand up with me!". Philip was not listening. He was lifting cokes [A/N: Yes, I KNOW it's anachronistic] in crates to deliver for the cabinet. "Come on, Philip, just say yes!" Will begged him.

"Will, do you ever stop to figure... how many bubbles there are in one bottle of this here soda pop?" Philip asked him, avoiding having to decide to come to the ball. "Philip, this is important!" William said. "Everything's important, Will! You, me, the sweet guy I work for..." Philip said.

"The 'Reps walk bad. They fight hard," William said, "And if we don't stop them now, we're gonna..." Philip interrupted him and handed William a crate of coke bottles. "Here, work for a living" he told William, and he gave the crate back to Philip.

"How do you like that? Four and a half years, I get to know a buddy and his family... I think I'm diggin' a guy's character... boy, am I a victim of disappointment in you..." William said to Philip.

"End your sufferin', little man!" Philip said. "Why don't you just... pack up your gear and get a job?" "'Cause your sister's hot for me!" William said. Philip then twisted William's arms and put them behind his back. "No! It's 'cause I hate livin' with my buggin' uncle!" William said. "Come on!" Philip said! "Come on, uncle!" William yelled.

"Now... go play games with the Feds." Philip said. "And why not? They're the greatest!" William replied. "Ain't they?"

"Were!" Philip said, taking a soda bottle and slapping the cap off. "Why? Ya found something better?" William asked him. "No, not yet, but..." "But what?" "You won't dig it, Will..." "So try me,"

"Come on. Philip, try me," William said. "Okay..." Philip said. "Every single night for the last month, I wake up. And I'm reaching out..." he said. "For what?" William asked him.

"I don't know!" "A dame?" "It's right outside the door. Just around the corner... but it's comin'!" "What is?" William asked. Philip was being very vague and it was kind of getting on his nerves.

"I don't know, it... it's like the kick I used to get from bein' a Fed, y'know?" Philip concluded. "Well, now you're talking! Man, without a group, you're an orphan! With a group, you walk in twos, threes, fours! And when your crew is the best, when you're a Fed, you're out in the Sun, buddy boy! You're home, free home!" William told Philip.

"Will, I've had it." Philip said, getting up from the garbage can he was sitting on while drinking his coke.

"Philip... Pip, look at me, will ya?" William asked Philip. "Come on, look at me." "I'm looking at you!" "Now, I never asked the time of day from a clock, did I? I never asked nothin' from nobody, but I'm asking you... come to the ball tonight,"

"I promised Washington I'd clean up the city hall tonight," Philip said. "Then do it after the ball!" William said, "Philip, I already told the guys you'd be there. If you don't show, I'll be marked lousy." "What time did you tell them?" Philip asked. "Ten. For me, Philip, for Will!" William begged his friend.

Philip let out a small laugh. "Ten it is!", he said, finally relenting. "Womb to tomb?" William asked. "Birth to earth, and I'll live to regret this!" Philip joked. Little did he know he was in for a ride of his life.

"Who knows? Maybe what you're waitin' for'll be twitchin' at the ball tonight!" "Yeah, who knows?" Philip said to William as William walked away.

"Who knows?" He said again, this time to himself...

He began to sing, "Could be.... who knows? " He set down the crate and sat on the steps. "There's somethin' due any day, I will know right away, soon as it shows... ". Philip then stood up. " It may come cannonballin' down through the sky, gleam in its eye, bright as a rose... who knows?  It's only just out of reach, down the block, on a beach, under a tree...

"I got a feelin' there's a miracle due, gonna come true, coming to me!" He then climbed the steps and grabbed the handbars of the stairs . " Could it be? Yes it could. Somethin's coming, somethin' good, if I can wait... Somethin's comin', I don't know what it is, but it is gonna be great!" He was sure of it.

"With a click, with a shock, phone'll jingle, door'll knock, open the latch..." He then went out into the alley. "Somethin's comin', don't know when, but it's soon, catch the moon. One-handed catch around the corner.  Or whistlin' down the river, come on, deliver to me!"

Philip began to wonder, " Will it be? Yes it will. Maybe just by holdin' still. It'll be there..." He than began to challenge, " Come on, somethin', come on in, don't be shy, meet a guy, pull up a chair! The air is hummin' , and somethin' great is comin'!" He was sure of it. "Who knows?  It's only just out of reach, down the block, on a beach, maybe tonight... maybe tonight... maybe tonight..."

Little did Philip know that a few stories above the building he was near was a girl that would change his life.
