'There are people who spend hours thinking about you, waiting for you to take one glance at them. Hoping you'll give them a chance. Hoping they can help. If anyone tries to fix you, let them. You deserve it.'
"I saw you last night."
Matt gazed up, waiting for her to laugh at the state he'd been in, or rant about how stupid he was. She didn't.
"And?" Matt questioned, unsure of what she was saying. Did Karen hate him more now? Had she decided to give up on him?
"And nothing." Karen stared at Matt, entranced by his deep brown eyes and furrowed brow.
Matt's nose twitched, as it often did when he was frightened or angry, his pulse quickened and he found himself slowly leaning forward. "I don't care." He spat into her face, knowing he didn't mean it. His eyes stared intently at her fearful face. Matt slammed the chair backwards and left Karen awestruck. After awkward silences and glances they were called into set, Matt's eyes ached with exhaustion but he didn't want to stop. Hungover from the previous night, he'd had to stop himself falling asleep more times than considered normal.
The thing that had kept him going was acting. If he dressed up and pretended to be another person, it would distract him from the truth. The truth he wished he didn't know. The truth that he'd never see her dazzling emerald eyes again. That her voice beside him in the morning was gone.He fired out lines, laughing and jumping around like he was happy.
"Come on Amy, you're getting married tomorrow!" Matt smiled, jumping with excitement.
"Yeah," Karen sighed, doing exactly what the script read.
"You don't sound very excited," matt stated quietly.
"It's just Rory... He's different."
"Good or bad?" Matt questioned.
"Bad."
"How?" Matt asked, though he'd read through the script almost a thousand times and knew the answer.
"He's not you."
Matt wished what she said was true, that Karen actually wanted to be with him.
Then came the moment, the moment they'd both been dreading all season. Karen stood up on her toes, starring into his eyes, Matt gazed back and began to lean in. What took only seconds could someday be the most important event of their lives. Just as their lips were about to touch, they were stopped. The both awkwardly looked away from each other."Right guys, you did great. Matt and Karen, you're done for today, but before you go I need you to grab Alex and Arthur from wherever they are, okay? And be back here 8:00am tomorrow, or I will make your characters die an excruciatingly painful and funny death!" Steven shouted.
Karen muffled a laugh, knowing he wasn't joking, "okay," she yelled back, tucking a strand of a ginger lock behind her ear.Matt put his eyes back down to the ground, his black shoes suddenly becoming very interesting. She was gone. He slowly turned and went to his dressing room to get changed, leaving the set behind. He ran his hand through his thick brown hair, thoughts barging through his head.
He knew that the kiss meant nothing, but he worried he'd betrayed his girlfriend. His dead girlfriend. The girlfriend he'd never see again.
"Why not me?" He screamed, "why do the good people have to die? Why does everyone leave me?" Matt slammed his fist into the wall, cracking his knuckles and breaking the wall.
He started to panic, overwhelmed by everything. His breathing quickened and tears swam in his eyes, she was dead. Black spots began to appear.
He fell to the ground.
No one was there to catch him.
He just lay there, slowly slipping away into a deep sleep, his cheeks still stained red.Karen stayed and talked to people on set for awhile, but then retreated to her dressing room and to get Alex and Arthur. She walked slowly to the cafe, knowing they'd be there.
"Hey babes!" Karen laughed, walking in to the familiar blue cafe,
"Karen!" Arthur cheered, "haven't seen you in ages."
"Yeah, a couple hours is just too long," Karen replied sarcastically.
"Hey," Alex smiled.
"Hey Alex. How are you both?" Karen asked.
"Alright, I guess," Arthur said.Alex and him shared a look, having a conversation through their eyes.
"We need to do something about Matt," Alex finally said, letting out a sigh.
"He's completely out of it. He doesn't even take the time to insult you back anymore Karen, he comes in hungover, he barely talks to anyone aside from when he's acting, he's forgotten about everything except his girlfriend. He's giving up and we have to do something," Arthur murmured.
"It's stupid, they weren't even that serious. He's obviously attention seeking, seriously, he's a mess but it's all a lie. I bet he doesn't even care about her," Karen scoffed, knowing she wanted to help him but blinding herself from the truth.
Arthur choked on the air, "are you serious? He's going through something like this and you're saying that? Don't even make that shit up. I thought you two were friends, even if you pretended to hate each other! You're fucking heartless Karen, she's dead for God's sake, and you're acting like it's a shitty joke. He's a mess because she was so fucking hopelessly in love with him. So stop fucking insulting him. It's fucking disrespectful," Arthur spat as her, slamming his fist onto the desk, making Karen flinch, "you need to bloody fix him."Even if she didn't want admit it, Karen had missed the way they used to be. When they'd laugh and piss off producers, before their fight. She sunk into her chair, sighing.
"Please? For us," Alex plead whilst Arthur sent her daggers with his eyes.
"Okay, I'll do it," she murmured, letting out a shaky breath, "I'll fix him."
