Chapter Twenty Seven: Brooke
The sound of cheering and punches being thrown fill the air. Just the sound of it makes my adrenaline level go sky high.
"Hello?" A new and unfamiliar voice says from behind me. Going with my instincts, I pivot on my feet and approach him.
He's a small guy with a medium build. And the way he's standing, he's trying to intimidate me. I try to hide my smile.
He obviously doesn't know who I am.
"Yes?" I ask, impatiently. I could practically hear the rings calling my name.
He raises his eyebrow at me. "I was just wondering, what's a lady like you doing in a place like this?" He says to me, gesturing around him.
Currently, I've just walked into my most worshipped place, not that I'm going to tell you where yet...
"Looks can be very deceiving.. What's your name again?" I ask of him.
"Adam. Adam Withering."
"Well, Adam Withering, looks can be very deceiving. As I may look like a lady, I certainly don't act like one. You see, I know exactly where I am. I could kiss your arse without even breaking a sweat. And clearly you don't know who I am, so you?"
"You're just a innocent girl, you couldn't do shit! Your just saying you know where you are, when in fact you're probably come here to collect your boyfriend." He rambles on.
Now, I actually laugh at him. Meanwhile he stares at me curiously.
"You're new, aren't you?" I say to Adam.
He nods slowly.
"Thought so." I say to myself, but he can hear me, "Now, who do you think I am?"
"How would I know?! I'm new!" He says, clueless.
Behind Adam, I see a familiar hunched over figure walking in our direction.
"Tom!" I shout him over, losing interest in Adam.
His head snapped up and his face lightens up when he notices its me. He walks quicker towards us.
"Hey babydoll! Not seen you in what, 8 months?" He says to me, "you know, you upset me. I didn't even get a goodbye!" He scolds me.
"Yeah, sorry about that. I wasn't in a good place then." I explain.
It's then that Tom notices Adam awkwardly watching our exchanges.
"Hey Adam. I'd like you to meet my babydoll, Brooke Smith." He introduces.I watch in amusement as Adams eyes go from confused and suspicious to fearful and understanding.
Yep, he defiantly knows who I am now.
"As in, the Brooke Smith. Known as the Raving Knockout! Holy shit!" He says to himself in awe.
I smile to myself. Every single person in Thai building would know my name, and flinch as the sound of it.
"The very one. This girl has been here since she was 16! That's 9 years! Can you believe that?! I trained this girl as if she was my own." He says to him, his voice filled with pride.
"Fuck! I've heard so much about you!" Adam says to me, turning into a fan boy. And as if we hadn't just had a whole conversation about who I was and what I was doing.
We say our goodbyes to Adam and move into Toms office.
"So Brooke, what you doing in this place after 8 months?" He asks me, sitting down across from me in his desk chair."Well, I miss this place too y'know? I miss the blood. The bruises the morning after. The cheering. The adrenaline it gives you! It's an incredible feeling." I state.
He nods, agreeing. "It is an amazing feeling. I can see why you, and others, like it. But, what I really want to know, is why you left in the first place?" He asks, curiously and concerned.
My hands tense in my lap, "This. It got to me. I wasn't a very nice person. People started to notice my behaviour. I had to have a break from... This." I explain, slowly unclenching my fists.
"Well. I know what you mean. I stopped fighting at the age of 42. I'm now 63 and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss fighting. But I don't regret my decision." He says, "In fact, I sometimes think it was the best decision I ever made."
It's silent for a few minutes. But it isn't awkward. It's one of those comforting silences, one that you can just sit there and think about.
"But moving on." Tom pushes forward, "Are you back?"
I nod, "I am, Tom. And I'm in desperate need for a hit. What you got?" I ask, rubbing my hands together and leaning forward.
"Errrr." Tom says while he flickers through the file right in front of him. "I have Gary Lee. Age: 31. Been with us for 3 years. Small build. What you think?" He asks me.
"Perfect." Is all I comment.
Ive had Gary before, and his technique isn't very good. He looses concentration easily.
"Okay. Let's get you ready." Tom says, smiling to himself. Probably because he knows I'm going to win this before it's even started.
------------------------------------------------
"You ready kid?" Tom asks me, his hands on both of my shoulders."As I'll ever be." I reassure.
Everything from tonight comes at me full force. How Sam reacted to me being a virgin. That was out of order. As if I wasn't already self conscious about that subject.
I just hadn't found the right person to give myself to. And to be honest, I was saving myself for marriage, or even someone special. You may think this isn't really like me, but I was busy as a teenager and young adult.
BING!
"Come on, babydoll. Time for some action." He says to me, patting me on the back and pushing me forward.
The guy stood next to Gary, Steve, is topless as usual.
Nothing's changed then.
Steve and I get along, and I would class him as my friend. We've gone for drinks a few times, and it was such a laugh.
"Welcoming back, Brooke Smith. RAVING KNOCKOUT!"
Extremely loud cheering.
"And introducing Gary Lee. Which has no name. How sad!"
Booing.
Gary rolls his eyes at the crowd surrounding us.
You wouldn't see anyone in this sort of situation. A girl against a boy.
People say it's wrong, or even unfair. But in this case, it's wrong for me to be fighting someone lower than me."Before we start, I'd just like to say. There are no rules. Whatsoever. So everything from girl fighting, no offence" he comments to me
"None taken. But you should know better." I reply.
"Haha, to fatal injuries. So, welcome to fight club, and let there be lots of violence!!"
Lots of more cheering of excitement
BING!
And off we go, throwing punches at each other.
God, I've missed this.
