Magnificent, aren't they? Some treat them as friends, some treat them as slaves. Some treat them like more than friends, some treat them like less than slaves. Many people wonder, where did they come from?

Javero City was a peaceful one. Only ten thousand people lived there because it was isolated from everything else. There was a lake to the north, a huge forest to the west and south, and more forest plus mountains to the east. The only connection to the outside world was maintained by a lone ferry appearing two times a week with supplies and allowing people to leave to a bigger city. Only humans.

Young people that wanted to be pokemon trainers had to move somewhere else because pokemon in the area weren't very kind. The city's population was an aging one, that was the reason there weren't many pokemon trainers here. If someone was crazy enough to become one, they moved to a more suitable city for it.

So there weren't any pokemon trainers in Javero city. Because of that, the pokemon lacking any interaction with civilization slowly turned wild over time. They became aggressive towards humans, and frequent attacks of singular pokemon on the city begun.

Its inhabitants got used to it and kept the number of fatal encounters at minimum. Children at school were taught how to defend themselves. The supplies coming from the ferry often included guns and ammunition, which were owned by almost everyone in the city.

This situation got a weird effect on Javero's inhabitants. They learned to be calm, even if the world around them is burning to the ground. Nonetheless, their position was still quite depressing, so the whole city got filled with sad, ignorant, sarcastic people that knew how to fight. What a beautiful place to live in.

It was seven am, the most hated hour by students at the local school. There was only one in the whole city, so again, more ambitious people had to move out. If someone smart was too poor to do so, then they had to deal with the same incompetent teachers everyday. Imagine being bossed around by someone that's probably dumber than you.

But this book is not about the problems of our education system. It's about a certain group of one human and five not humans. Let's focus on the human, first.

His name was Frank, and he lived in Javero city. His knowledge of pokemon was below average, but at least school taught him how to defend himself against them, kind of. It was mostly a training on how hide from one, but they also taught the kids how to use basic melee weapons. Risky, but it worked out so far.

The alarm clock in Frank's room started ringing, forcing him to go from his bed to the other side of the room to turn it off. After doing so, he went back to sleep. The second time it ringed, he decided to actually do something with his life, and went to the living room where his breakfast was waiting for him.

Only him and his mother lived in the house after his parents got divorced. They had enough problems at home, so Frank didn't really care why that happened. It did, and there was no reason to cry about it. They changed their surnames and then moved on with their lives, now in poverty. because his dad used to be the working member of the family.

He always wanted to be a teacher, just to show those idiots that he could do their job better. How hard could it be to not act like a dick? Or to not give students too much useless homework that will take away their time for expanding their hobbies? Sorry, I got carried away a little. What was I talking about? Right, the human.

Along with his breakfast, there was a note on the table:

"I had to leave early today, don't miss any classes! See you in the afternoon! :)

- mom

And the usual smiley face. She was putting them at the end of any message she was writing, even if it was formal. It could mean a variety of things from "love you" to "you're dead to me". Frank had yet to experience the latter one.
