A Promise (A RWBY Fanfic)

Prologue - A Couple of Street Rats

Coal's POV:

I am currently running through a crowd in the streets of Mistral, knocking in to people and taking any lien they had on there person. I get out of the crowd and run into the alleyway I call home. I start rummaging through my stash of food until I hear screaming in the next alley over.

I sneak up to the alley, putting my back against it. I take a look in to see to guys standing over a girl with her hair split between brown and pink with some white on the pink side of her hair. She was in dirty and riped clothes. The men were also yelling at her. I walk up behind them activating my semblance.

Coal: Leave her alone and get out of here.

Man 1: (Turns around) get out of here kid or you'll end up like her.

Coal: If you don't get out of here now I'll tear you apart.

Man 2: Well get a look at this kid, he thinks he's tuff.

Coal: Suit your selves.

I command the shadows to grab and pull, tearing off the men's arms and legs. Blood paints the alley in crimson. Though I did tell the shadows to keep me and the girl clean.

Coal: Hay, are you okay?

The girl just nods her head and sits up. She looks at me and I find she has a brown eye and pink eye.

Coal: What's your name? Mines Coal Vermillion.

The multi colored girl retches into one of her pockets and pulls out a small note book and a pencil. She starts to write something down and shows it to me.

Multi colored girl: Mines Neopolitan.

Coal: No last name hu? So your mute, have no family, and are living on the streets.

Neopolitan nods.

Coal: Well I'm not much better off but I got a pretty good set up, you want to join me?

Neopolitan: You'll let me come with you?

Coal: Ya why not, having a partner would make things a hole lot easier don't you think? I'm gonna call you Neo, that fine?

Neo: Thank you! And Neo is fine.... Did you use your semblance to kill them?

Coal: Yes. My semblance lets me control shadows. I unlock it after I was beaten in an ally like you just now. Anyway let's get going.

I turn around and start walking when I feel a tug on my sleeve. I turn back to see Neo holding up her note book.

Neo: I want you to promise me you'll stay by my side and take care of me. Though thick and thin.

Coal: (Smiles softly) I promise. I also promise to protect and train you... We will be the greatest street rats to ever live!! (Neo smirks at me) Now let's get out of here before someone spots us.

She nods and I continue walking. Before we get out of the alleyway she grabs my hand. I squeeze her hand before intertwining my fingers with hers. I WILL not brake this promise.
