The bar was quiet tonight. Apparently they were getting in another singer. Someone that Blanche was going to sing with for a month or so. He was an ‘upcoming singer’. She was mainly upset at the fact that they had to be put together on the night, no one told her about it, just sprung it on her. They hadn’t practiced. Maybe he was really good, and they didn’t need to practice. Maybe that’s why Carl hired him and didn’t tell her. Surely that was the case.

The band was setting up the stage. She huffed. The douche bag was late. He could have at least been here on time so that he could help out with sound check.

“Alright guys, this is Liam.” Carl’s voice was deep and husky as he introduced us to the new guy.

Blanche looked up from helping with sound system. Her heart sank. No way.

“Hey guys. I’m sorry it’s short notice.” Liam’s voice sang into her ears.

“His flight was delayed. He was supposed to be here this afternoon. He’s just gotten off of the plane practically.” Carl finished for him. “That’s Ricky on the drums, Cathy on the bass, Anthony – guitar, Ash – also on guitar, and Blanche, your competitor.” Carl chuckled.

Liam’s smile dropped as he was introduced to Blanche. “Hey Liam.” The tone in her voice was weak.

“Avalanche...” he whispered. “How have you been?”

The nickname felt weird, it was stranger to hear it roll off of his tongue. “I’ve been better.”

“You guys know each other?” Carl made the introduction even worse.

“Yeah, we used to go out.” Liam said looking to the large man.

“Oh...well, I’ll leave you guys to catch up.” Carl walked off, leaving the two of them facing each other awkwardly.

“You look great.” Liam managed to say.

“Thanks. So do you.” She was biting her lip again, a sign that Liam instantly picked up on.

“You alright?” She saw his hand start to reach for her arm but he let it fall to his side again. Good move.

“Yeah, I’m great. At least I know you’re a good singer. I was worried we’d fuck up tonight.” She said continuing with the speakers.

“Still cursing like a sailor.” He had a weak smile on his face.

“I think it doesn’t help that the people I work with are just as bad.” Blanche said plugging the last cable.

Liam looked around, “They don’t see –

“Not here.” She half chuckled. “I only work Sundays. During the week I’m in the shop.” Blanche stopped, her hands on my hips. She was looking at him now, with a smirk on her face. “I’m a receptionist at a tattoo parlour.”

“Oh, well yes. That doesn’t help.” He smiled too, a genuine one. God she missed those dimples. Shaking the thought, Blanche stood back, looking at the stage. Everything seemed ready. “So what do we want to start off with boys, and Cathy?”

“Geek in the Pink?” Liam smirked.

Even after all this time, the kid still knew me. “You guys know it right?” She watched as everyone nodded and Cat gave her the thumbs up.

Liam started them off,

Well, let the geek in the pink take a stab at it

If you like the way I'm thinkin', baby, wink at it
