11 | "THE GROWING GOOD OF THE WORLD."

     "HERE." DIANA SAID as she handed her friend a cloth to place onto Billy's burnt ear.

"Everyone! Students! Gather your things an be on your way. Class is dismissed for today. Let's get you home."

"Stay still." Alice told Billy.

The boy nodded his head and groaned in pain, he didnt want Alice to help him but she did dispite this. Maybe he was wrong about the girl.

Alice helped Jane and Prissy take Billy home, along with Miss Stacey to explain what had happened.

"Billy!" Mrs Andrew's said as she saw her son holding the cloth to his ear. "Oh my word! What happened?"

Her eyes landed on Alice and she glared but Billy shook his head at his mother. "It wasnt her."

Miss Stacey gulped and began to explain. After the explanation to Mrs Andrew's, Miss Stacey and Alice went to Anne's now broken place of sanctuary.

"Im so sorry Anne. So very, very sorry."

"This is all my fault."

"I ruined things- I should have never gone to his house."

"I wanted you to like me, I was selfish about Cole!"

"If I could take it all back I would." The pair stated at the same time.

Miss Stacy smiled and sat down on a log, causing the two red heads to follow. "Do you know if...Will Cole be punished?" Anne asked.

"Its clear Billy's actions precipitated the incident. I, on the other hand, am on probation."

Anne looked at the woman. "Probation?"

"Yes. In my addition to my suspect teaching methods and lack of control over the classroom-"

"That had nothing to do with you." Alice sighed.

Miss Stacey gave the girl a weak smile and continued. "Apparently home wrecker has been added to the list of infractions."

Anne shook her head. "I...dont understand."

"Neither do I. People think what they want to, dispite the truth. I figure the writing's on the wall."

"What do you mean?" Alice asked.

Miss Stacey sat in a momnets silence. "I expect to be let go. In any case, until they decide my fate, I wont be teaching."

Alice helped Anne carry some things back to the farm. But Anne dropped her things when she saw how Matthew was now protecting the chickens. She fell to the floor and everyone rushed over.

She got up and hugged Matthew while Alice walked over to Jerry. "Thank you."

He nodded and smiled softly before turning back to Anne, Matthew and now Marilla.
