Eve didn’t like the three empty walls that were considered a shelter. But this was better than the last one. The others constantly insisted on the woods, but she insisted on not getting a cold. Peter and Nick, distant cousins, huddled in the corner. Nick had out a pencil and paper and was speaking rapidly with big words. Eve could barely make any of them out over the howling wind. Peter was nodding his head and pointing at certain parts of the paper. Lysa sat with her stony face like a wall that no one could break. Her legs were crossed and her back rested on the brick wall, yet her eyes were alert and her muscles were tensed. Sam was a little ways away, letting himself get hit by all the elements. He enjoyed that somehow. Eve blew hot breath on her icicle fingers. There was no snow yet, just sad, brown, dead leaves that sprinted with the wind. Eve looked at the little pack. What were they calling themselves now? The truthers? The ‘we kind of know what’s going on’ people, or the lost kids with no family? Whatever the name was, it was bound to change when Peter found a new slogan against the opponents. Eve’s teeth chattered as she let her eyes flutter to Sam. His jean jacket was tattered and torn, he liked it that way.
“The best thing to do is to move again tomorrow. There’s some rumors in Scarlet that I want to track down.” Nick stated while pushing up his huge glasses. Peter nodded. They put their supplies away and lay down to sleep, or at least try. Lysa was still wide awake as her black hair batted at her face. She was quiescent, like a doll. No, not a doll, a corpse. She looked like the fiercely beautiful dead. Eve tried to lock her jaw in a hopeless attempt to stop her vibrating teeth. Her legs were cold, her arms were cold. She was positive her face was a block of ice by now. Eve’s stomach rumbled, which caught Sam’s ears, and he looked at her. He was over 10 feet away. Still, he heard the moans of her hunger. The limited heat Eve had scampered into her cheeks. He looked away and Eve calmed slightly until the evil wind started biting her ears. She lay down on the scraps that were left of a smooth wooden floor. What all had happened during the plague? An old world left with rasping breath as the new world came with mighty bellows. Bellows that told the people many lies, lies that she and her gang where going to get to the bottom of. She remembered the group name now, the Big Bad Wolves.
