Luna blew the hair out of her face as she sat down on a chair, hand on her chin as she watched the other debutantes twirl together, especially her sister, Celestia, who already had many suitors asking for a dance.

She had been asked too by many but she turned them down. Dancing was not one of her favourite pastimes and her heels were not encouraging her either.

She raised her head to see her mother giving her a look which she returned with a sheepish shrug, pointing to her shoes as an excuse.

Her mother sighed, smiling softly at her before returning to conversation with the other debutante parents.

Luna watched the clock tick with each agonising second, wanting this ridiculous dance to be done and over with. She had spent each year's ball like this since the first for she had found each suitor to be dull and uninteresting. She held in a gag, remembering Blueblood from her ball two years ago, who was awfully dreadful to dance with.

She turned her head to see the gardens outside, her annual refuge from the ball and with a quick glance to see if anyone was watching her, she quietly slipped outside, much to her delight.

Crickets chirped beneath the grass and the moon shone gracefully through the clear night sky. Luna rested her head on the balcony, breathing in the fresh air.

It was her favourite thing to do each ball.

Footsteps crackled in the grass behind her and she spun sharply to see who it was.

A boy with skin like the colour of clouds, thick raven hair that flowed to his shoulders paired with scarlet eyes.

He looked her age. Perhaps a bit older.

He stopped short, eyes widening at the sight of Luna.

"M-My apologies," He said with a bow. " I wasn't aware anyone was here."

She curtsied in return, wary eyes on the newcomer." It is alright."

She tilted her head, her face furrowed. " But my apologies in advance, may I know who you are? I do not remember seeing you at previous balls."

"This is my first year at the ball." He explained. " I am Sombra of Umbra. And you?"

" Luna of Equestria. Why are you not inside then?" She asked, intrigued by him.

"I could ask you the same thing, Lady Luna." He said, eyes alight.

She smiled in amusement. " Touché."

She rested herself against the balcony, supporting herself with her elbows as she crossed her arms." I have been coming to the ball for a few years now and it's the same every year. Suitors who can barely socialise and dance. Makes no difference if I'm in there or here, no one has ever caught my attention."

Luna glanced at him, awaiting his response.

"My Mother forced me to attend actually," Sombra said. " I had been resisting to come in favour of my studies but it's autumn break now so she practically jumped at the chance."

She laughed at his story. " Are you not interested in any of the suitors here?"

He shook his head." No, I have no interest in having a relationship and no one has caught my attention as well."

He gazed at her. " But that can change."

Luna gazed back thoughtfully. "Of course."

She looked around the gardens. "How long have you been here?"

"Since the start of the ball." He replied coolly.

Luna stared at him in disbelief before bursting in laughter. " I would have enjoyed your company for all my years here!"

He blushed and grinned in embarrassment, cracking up too.

Slowly their laughter trailed off.

" Would you like to walk around the gardens with me?" Asked Sombra.

She stared at him, before lifting herself up from the balcony. " That would be nice."

And they strolled quietly through the gardens.

"What are you studying?" Luna asked.

"Crystalline magic and the dark arts." He replied.

Luna lifted a brow, meeting his eyes." Dark arts? I thought that was only for highly skilled unicorns?"

Sombra returned her gaze with a cheeky grin. " Why? Do I not look skilled enough?"

"I didn't say that," Luna answered with a smile. " I practice it myself. It's rare for me to find another practitioner near my age given that magic takes a long time to hone."

"Then I guess I'm a skilled unicorn then." He quipped with a wink.

She rolled her eyes as they arrived at a bower, encapsulated with lilac wisteria.

They gazed at the flowers, admiring the decor.

"I have never been this deep in Amore's gardens before." Luna said as she gazed at the flora.

"It is beautiful," Sombra said, eyes finding hers. " We should remember this place."

They locked gaze.

He smiled, stretching out his hand towards her.

"Would you like to dance?"

Luna stared at his outstretched hand, surprised by his offer.

She raised her head to meet his eyes, smiling softly at him. "Yes."

She took his hand and they moved in perfect sync through lilac. They glided seamlessly over the fallen flower-covered path. They were so close to each other, she felt his warm breath on her neck and he felt her soft hair caressing his in return. They both flushed in response but laughed together, continuing their dance to the music only they could hear in the quiet moonlight.

Luna never felt like this before. Not because she had never met a dancer like him before, but because she had never met a person like him before. She barely knew him and now she wanted to know him more.

Sombra never broke their gaze, staring into her teal eyes as if bewitched by her. And he was.

He twirled her around gently and they ended their dance in each other's arms, feeling each other's pulse, warmth rising in their cheeks as they gazed at each other.

"You're a good dancer." Luna breathed, still lying against him.

He laughed. "Not too bad yourself."

She smiled and pulled away, face still flushed.

"I suppose we should head back now. Someone will notice two debutantes are nowhere to be seen." Sombra said, turning back his head in the direction of the ball.

" No one notices, believe me. How do you think I got away for so many years?"

"Touché ." He admitted.

His eyes shimmered. "How about another dance then, Lady Luna?"

She grinned. " It would be my pleasure, Lord Sombra."
