"Happy Birthday to you~" the losers sang, their voices filling up the clubhouse as Stanley blew out his candles. It was his 16th birthday, the day that he would finally be able to see his red string, to meet his soulmate.
He had been waiting for this moment since he was five years old and his mother had told him that he had someone out there that loved him more than anything else in the world. Let's just say that had set some high expectations.
Then Stanley met Bill. William Denbrough was the love of his life. He had realized this when they were in middle school and playing cards, something about the way that Bill threw back his head in laughter and the way his eyes sparkled made Stan's heart fill with admiration for the stuttering boy.
"Can you see your string yet Stan the man?" Richie asked nudging the noodle haired boy, god Stanley always hated Richie's humor. It was so unnecessary.
"Not yet Richie," he checked his clock and his heart sped up, "still ten whole minutes" only ten minutes.
Stan looked around the room, almost everyone had found their soulmates, Richie and Eddie being the obvious couple, and Ben and Beverley as well. Only Stan, Mike and Bill had to find their soulmates. Stanley always thought that it was funny that everyone so far had soulmates inside the losers club and he was hoping he wouldn't break the trend.
Bill was sixteen already and his string hadn't appeared yet, meaning that his soulmate was younger than him, now Stan was hoping that in, he checked his watch again, four minutes both his string and Bills string would appear.
He checked his watch again. The room was eerily quiet as everyone waited in suspence. You couldn't see anyone else's string, other than yours and your soulmates, so nobody really knew quite what was happening.
Five, four, three, two, one.
Stanley looked up, not daring to look at his own string, and instead looked to Bill. His face had turned a dark red and there seemed to be tears in his eyes.
"St-stan..." he muttered looking at the boy before him, Stanley finally looked at his hand, there was a cherry red string that fell to the floor, and withered like a snake, getting tangled in a pile and then inching until it finally reached the hand of Bill, "Stan, ah-are you seeing this?" Bill almost whispered.
"Yeah I am." Stan replied. He almost forgot the other losers were there, it just seemed like him and Bill were the only ones in the world. He stepped closer, trying to close any distance between them.
"Holy shit! Wait are you two soulmates?" Beverley yelled, finally connecting the dots. Everyone groaned at her disturbance of the moment, and the two soulmates awkwardly shuffled apart.
"Apparently." Stan said, and then with a smile, walked forward again, grabbed Bills shirt and kissed the stuttering boy.
They knew then that this was the perfect moment, even with Richie whooping and shaking Eddie with excitement. And even with Beverley extending her hand for money from Mike when she had realized she won a bet.
It was still perfect.
