I was taking the early shift for once. I'd swapped places with Andrew, he was a recruit with me. His wife was giving birth. So I swapped which probably wasn't the best idea as I'd been up all night too. I was exhausted.
Then a man dressed in rags and drenched in what I hope was water came in. "Please, please help me. These men they stole my coat and shoes and they hurt me." He said. He wasn't a young man and his eyes showed truth with those words.
I felt bad for him. "Sir, I'm not qualified to take a statement but I can show you to the interview room and bring in a blanket and some food?" I said. Hoping he'd accept my help. I can't do as much as I want though.
He smiled, seeming way to happy for that small help. I gave him a brown blanket and two bagels with bacon and cheese. By the time I was done it was the end of my shift. I said "goodbye" to him. But he just smiled. Clearly sure he would be seeing me again soon. Though I'm not sure how.
I greeted my co-worker. He was another recruit. His name was Mason. I told him what had happened and it seemed his eyes turned dark. "Don't worry me and the others will give him a proper greeting when they arrive," he said.
It was cold and dark and nothing like the guy I thought I knew. I just nodded, trying not to think the worst. It was hard though.
