"It's always been you." Richie promised Eddie

But  two years ago he had made that promise to Stan.

And a year before that, he had promised Troy the same thing.

Three boys, three years, three broken promises.

October, 2 years ago

"Meet in the bb court at 10:31." Richie kept reading and re-reading the note, like he couldn't believe it.

He knew who gave him the note, he knew why. He just didn't know if he should obey. He did anyway.

The basketball courts were indoor and abandoned. The high ceilings were falling apart and had several holes, after the budget cuts in Hawkins nobody cared enough to fix them.

"Richie?" Asked a voice from behind him.

"Fuck you Troy. I told you this isn't gonna happen." Said richie whipping around to face the taller boy

"Then why'd you come." Troy asked moving closer

Richie stared at the ground knowing Troy was right but not wanting to admit it. Troy grabbed richie by the arm, making sure he woudln't pull away this time.

But even if Troy wasn't holding richie so he couldn't pull away, he didn't want to anyway. When they kissed it just felt right, it felt new, dangerous but right.

The way Richie's thin body fit perfectly wedged in between Troy's broad shoulders (richie wasn't being fed at home and it showed),  the way the hues in their hair complimented eachother, the way they felt dangerous when they were together.

"Troy, I can't fucking do this." Said richie pulling away slowly

"I can't either, what do you think my father would do if he found out that I was gay." Troy said leaning in again

"This never fucking happened." Said richie pulling away again, a look of guilt on his face "meet me here same time tomorrow."

And that's how it happened, weeks of sneaking around, praying nobody would notice their secret meetings.

Troy and Richie chat:

Troy: Richie, it's been two months. I wan't people to know about us, i don't care what they say.

Richie: Troy, there's something I need to tell you.

Troy: what is it

Richie: I'm coming to urs

Troy: okay, my dad's not home so were chill.

Richie: you sure, he hates my guys

Troy: yeah, now just come over

Richie: ok

There he stood, on troy's front porch with a million things he had to say but just didn't know how.

He rang the doorbell and immeaditly regretted it.

"Richie?" Asked Troy half scared half relieved

"Troy, I'm moving tomorrow. I didn't want to tell you because if I said it then it'd be true." Said richie tears in his eyes.

"W-what does this mean for us." Asked Troy shakeyley

"Troy, it's you, it's always been you but I can't do this. I'm sorry."

2 years later

Richie heard a knock on the door

"I'll be right back Eds." He said separating their faces and walking to the door to greet the solicitor

Richie opened the door and was greeted by a tall man he once loved "you said it was me."

It was Troy.
