Forests at night are the scariest places in the world.

Especially when you're about to die.

Crack! Crack!

The sound of projectile nets and bullets combined hitting the trees around me rang in my ears as I stumbled through the heavy undergrowth, frantically trying to fight my way to the edge of the forest.

There was no sight of the others, Logan had darted somewhere right after the first shot, and god knows where Patton and Virgil where. I just hoped they had made it back to the van, or at least to the highway.

Find the car!

Thwack!

"Shit! What the-"

I growled as searing pain exploded on my hip. I could feel the blood running down my leg and the agony made my mind go fuzzy for a second. I probably should've been worried about that, but there was too much adrenaline pumping through my brains for it to even register.

Clutching my side, I made myself stop for a second, and it when only then that I noticed the silence around me.

Keep running! Keep running!

Suddenly I saw a blur pass me, accompanied by the rustling of leaves. My heart skipped a beat.

"Virgil?!" I called out into the pitch black.

No reply. Everything was undisturbed once again.

Staying still gets you killed. Hurry up!

Standing up as quickly as I could, I dashed through the foliage.

Was Patton already at the road? Logan had gone a different direction, full speed into the trees.

God let it be Virgil that I had sen just then!

We hadn't prepared for this. What could possibly have warned us that something like this would occur? We hadn't told anyone we were doing this where we were going tonight.

So who on earth was trying to kill us?

My lungs tired and empty, I panted.

Just a week or two after this, after we had transformed, I could have cleared this area easily. Limitless. Unbound. Free. My superhuman senses instantly being able to tell me exactly what was happening.

These mystery people, men in black, whoever they were, would be toast. We could've taken them down easily. With our abilities, our flock would have wrecked them. Hunted them down like they were chickens. Then done the dirty work.

But not that night, not before the change. Back then I was weak. Powerless. And incredibly frightened.

So I bolted. Fast. Twigs scratched my skin and scraped at my arms and legs. After what seemed like forever, I made it through. I relished the fresh air.

I took in my surroundings- I was close, I had made it to the field!

A voice startled me from the right.

"Hey, Roman! You made it!"

Thank the lord. Logan!

In the deep night, I was barely able to make out the outline of the car as I jumped over the railing on the side of the road and spun around to quickly study the edge of the forest, looking for signs of movement. For the time being, it was clear.

My vision was blurry at the sides. I collapsed to the ground, groaning, my lungs heaving for air. "Did you spot Virgil? Patton?"

"Present!" I heard a familiarly moody voice call to me from somewhere outside my field of vision. I turned to see him run to the car and unlock it, quickly jumping into the driver's seat. He hesitated, too paranoid to put the keys into the ignition, wary of the sound.

Somewhere, Patton was still running.

I felt worry starting to leak into the corners of my mind as we waited, worriedly scanning the area for any signs of him.

Oh God, oh god, oh god, please let him be okay...
