09 - a second time

The weather was getting warmer.

Evangeline lazily traced the rain-stained marks on the chilled glass. Sitting by her bedroom window, she could see the snow melting against the asphalt on the driveway, trickling into separate pathways of water.

Pretty, she thought.

Sometimes, all you needed was to sit back and appreciate Mother Nature.

Evangeline's eyes fluttered close, absorbing the silence.

Recently, she'd become more...sedentary. Crazy Eva hadn't surfaced ever since that fateful rainy morning.

This was a good thing.

...

Though, Eva couldn't help but feel less...whole.

Why was that?

Her eyes reluctantly swept towards the pile of homework on her desk. It seemed to be taunting her:

"You know you have to get through me eventually."

Evangeline pretended not to notice, averting her eyes to stare at her ceiling.

"Want to fail school?"

No, of course not! she wanted to scream. In fact, she wanted to grab the entire pile and throw it into the recycling bin across the street.

But. She. Couldn't.

Can't? Or won't?

She rubbed the pencil smudge on the side of her right hand, earned earlier from working on a different pile of assignments. If she started on this pile, it would take four hours to finish.

A lightbulb flickered in Eva's head.

Instead of being productive for school, she could be productive elsewhere, plus earn something way better than a pencil smudge.

With no hesitation, she grabbed her things and snatched the Coffee House uniform on her way out the door.

Cole cleared his throat awkwardly. "So, uh, do you..."

"...want revenge?"

"Wha—!" Cole sputtered, staring at his manager in astonishment. "No, I mean, do you have—"

"—a thirst for blood?"

Just where is she getting all these dark thoughts from? he thought, slightly concerned.

Ava grinned back at him. "Sorry, I just wanted to see how you would react. I must say, it's not often that I see you disoriented."

Cole was not amused.

Unaffected, his manager replied to his earlier statement, "Now what did you want to ask me?"

Cole spoke uneasily. "Um, do you have any," he braced for another interruption, "kids?"

Ada's eyes widened. "Oh!" She paused. "Well yes, I do. A daughter around your age, in fact."

"Really?"

"Mhm. She went to your school."

"What's her name? Maybe I've seen her around."

A look came over his boss, her mouth suddenly becoming tense. "No, you wouldn't have, dear. She moved away to the city around a month before school."

"How come?"

His manager hesitated, then said quieter now,

"She fell in love."
