Dear reader, the time for midterms had arrived for Evangeline Roscher.
Eva stood in the middle of the expansive examination hall, and like many others around her, she anxiously reviewed her notes. The notes Cole had given her.
By some miracle, she had managed to plow through two weeks' worth of study material. She made a mental reminder to thank Cole later.
Unfortunately, Amelia was in another part of the building about to take her Chemistry midterm, so Eva was all by herself. For a moment, she scanned the room.
A head of beach-blond hair caught her eye. Eva knew exactly who he was before he turned around.
Quickly, she turned the other way, hoping to find somewhere where Trevor couldn't see her.
Fast footsteps sounded behind Evangeline. Her heart fell in dismay.
Great, the last thing I need before the exam is a distraction.
"You're here!"
Slowly, Evangeline turned her head back around, meeting Trevor's beaming smile. She forced a smile. "...Yep."
Trevor spotted the bundle of papers held in her hand. "You even had time to make notes?"
She shifted them around. "Well, I had some help."
"From who?"
"Someone way more helpful than you."
His mouth quirked down momentarily, then gave way to a smile. "Oh, I don't know about that."
Evangeline sighed, too tired to reply back. As it was, she had two more chapters left to review. She silently turned her back to him and went back to her notes.
Fortunately, Trevor didn't nag her after that. The moment Eva finished the last page, the loudspeaker rumbled to life:
"Good morning, examinees. Your test is about to begin. Please enter the room in an organized fashion."
Evangeline stuffed her notes into her bag.
Well, in Cole we trust.

Cole was on his way to his afternoon exam when he received a phone call.
Recognizing the caller ID, he picked up, shifting himself in the car's backseat. The tinted windows allowed for much-needed privacy.
"Did you manage to find anything?" Cole asked the other end.
"Yes, sir," the caller replied. "We traced the number you gave us to its device, but its origins remain somewhat vague. However, we were able to determine it as a burner phone."
Great. Whoever was sending these messages was smart and cautious to conceal their identity.
"Did you find anything related to the phone?"
"Er, yes. We managed to track down where it was last detected. It seems that it was manufactured somewhere in the south of New Melrose."
That meant that this person had to be nearby. "That's a lead you can work with, I assume?"
His private investigator took a solemn tone. "With what we have now, it's hard to tell. I suggest you remain in contact with them to see if any more information can be extracted."
Cole sighed. "Alright, I'll keep in touch."
Investigation aside, he had an exam to take.
