What do you get when you combine a girl, a bike, a downward slope, and a rainy day?
Well, by the forces of gravity, a disaster.
This is precisely the predicament Evangeline Roscher found herself in as she raced down a considerably steep road on her clunky, worn-out bike, at what seems to be a record-breaking speed. Droplets fell on her face, sticking strands of hair haphazardly around her eyes. Great, I can barely see now.
She took a quick glance at her watch—7:57 AM. Her eyes tripled in size (figuratively, of course).
Fuck! I'm gonna be late, she thought to herself.
Her legs were no use now as gravity was doing the work for her. With the rain-soaked streets allowing barely any friction between her bike's wheels and the road underneath, her brakes were useless against the unrelenting downward path, much to her dismay.
Most people, in these kinds of situations, would immediately find a way to get off the bike and away from potentially cracking their skull open. However, Evangeline Roscher was no ordinary person.
Instead, she saw this as an opportunity.
(Cue the audible gasps from an imaginary audience. Yes, that means you, dear reader.)
Evangeline considered herself a fairly reasonable, level-headed person. She believed she had a good head on her shoulders, a person who knows where their priorities lie and when to take a step back and think things through. However, on occasion, she lets another side of her take over: Crazy Eva, as dubbed by her parents and close friends. Unsurprisingly, she despised the nickname, arguing that 'crazy' was too strong of a word. When this side of hers took over, she became more impulsive and led by emotion rather than thought. In her defense, this unique phenomenon was her merely shortening the time needed to make a reasonable decision, so it was inevitable for a few wrong decisions to be made and a few priorities shifted around. After all, she was only human.
However, humans can get hurt. Oh! And also die when placed in very dangerous situations.
In such situations, humans activate their flight-or-fight response. This triggers an adrenaline rush, which was what Evangeline felt as she sped down the slippery slope. Her heart was beating a mile a minute and her brain was working overtime to just think of something to do.
Did I mention that as Crazy Eva, her priorities were all over the place? It comes to no surprise that Evangeline's mind wandered to consider her choices:
Option 1: Find some way to get off the uncontrollable bike and seek safety on a (preferably) stagnant surface. Such as the road beneath her.
Pro: Avoid any critical injuries and ensure she would live to see the day. What day? Well, Evangeline wasn't sure.
Con: With the loss of her bike, she would have to run the rest of the way to her job interview, something very, very important to her. The likelihood of reaching it in time was next to nothing.
Option 2: Race against time and use this opportunity of speed to arrive on time and (hopefully), in one piece.
Pro: Secure her coveted, precious job interview and make good first impressions. The likelihood of getting her first job would be in her favor.
Con: A few broken bones, or maybe a concussion that would leave her in a long, long coma. Or, oh, I don't know... Death?
Crazy Eva chose Option 2.
(Cue another round of shock from the same imaginary audience)
Before we continue along with Eva's impending doom and ridiculous decision-making, I guess I should provide some sort of explanation for this.
