"Y/N, why do you have a book in your hand?" The brunette looked over at Demir, the head of the household. "You have chores to do!" He ripped the books away from her hand and motioned to the door.

"I want the guesthouse spotless, by the time I come back from the assembly." Demir shouted.

Demir was one of the five elected officials, it was his job to enforce laws given by the council of elders. The job was a harsh one that only people who devoted their lives to Sparta could complete.

"Yes, árchontas." the girl bowed before she left to the guest house.  She was a helot, or in simpler terms a peasant that was meant to serve Sparta.

Her family weren't always peasants, her great-grandmother was a shop owner that sold the best fruits and vegetables. Their home was once called Messenia. When her mother was a little girl, Sparta came and captured almost all the Messenians.

The Messenians became helots and lost their freedom. There was a point in history when the helots tried to revolt.

They didn't win, the expertise of the Spartan battle skills and strong armor was no match for the helots. A day was put in place, similar to the purge so the helots would not revolt again.

Y/N swept the room in a hurry. "I can't believe, I'm stuck here again. Demir is always on my back about cleaning. It's unfair." She growled in anger.

After a good ten minutes of sweeping the room looked spotless. Y/N walked out of the house to the main house. The family insisted that all their servants be in the house except for gardeners.

After she was finished cleaning she started going back to her room.

Y/N ran to her room to avoid being seen by any of the brothers.

Demir had four children. Ares was the oldest brother, then was Naxos, and Elis. Demir only had one girl her and her name was Kyra. She the youngest.

Each sibling had their strengths and flaws, however, Ares and Naxos, had one of the worst flaws.

Pride

Pride always got in the way.

Y/N went to her bed and grabbed the book hidden underneath it. She wasn't going to let Demir stop her from her passion and she wasn't going to turn up like the Spartan girls.

The book she was reading was about different types of herbs. When she did go out of town which was hardly ever she was fascinated with the plants and their abilities.

She was startled out of her book by the sound of her door opening. She hastily put it away under her pillow before turning around. "Yes?"

The door opened wider to reveal Davian, one of Y/N's older brothers. She was the only girl out of her mother's three children.

Her eyes widen and she moved to close the door, "Davi, you can't be in here. If Demir or the others found out-"

He pulled her into a hug. "Don't worry, dear sister." He pulled away at arm's length. "I've brought you a present."

He reaches into his tattered satchel and pulls out a few different plants. Y/N gently grabbed the plants. Her eyes had a twinkle in them.

Davian was always the daring sibling, he was always leaving the land that they were forced to stay on. It didn't matter how many times he was punished, he continued to do what he wanted.

Her other older sibling, Fern, was the exact opposite of Davian, he was responsible, rarely left the grounds, and made sure to always obey Demir. Fern rarely took risks.

"Don't tell me you left the land again." She already knew the answer would be yes. Typical of the brother.

He rolled his eyes, "Yes, I did. Aren't you happy?" Y/N sighed in exasperation.

"Yes, I am." She paused, "I'm just worried, I don't know what might happen if you upset Demir again. He might not be so lenient next time."

Davian chuckled, "If you call 30 lashings lenient."

Y/N walked over to the window and looked out at the fields. Davian frowned from behind her. He knew that she was often worried about his reckless tendencies.

He walked over to her and gave her a hug from behind. "I promise you, I'll be okay." He gave her one last squeeze before walking out of the door.

She walked over to her small end table where the plants were and smiled. Even if her brother was a reckless fool sometimes, he always knew how to make her smile.

Y/N looked over the field and beyond at the mountain tops. "One day, I wish to see other villages and what lays beyond those mountains."

It was forbidden to leave the land you worked on, as a helot. If captured you might even be sentenced to death.

If she wants to leave bad enough, she might just have to take a Leap of Faith.
