I finished making my sleeping spot look nice, and after the boys finally got away from the showers, I took a quick one and brushed my teeth. Gotta have the smiling to sell papes ya know?
"Hey! Ya heard Jack's baby sista! Get a move on!" I heard Race from outside of the Lodge house.
These boys, I swear. Jack maybe their leader of lower manhattan, but I was the only girl here. I became a mother to them, and they were kind. They weren't rude or awful boys. They were just trying to make a living out of selling newspapers. Plus, I think the fact that Jack was here he may have given them the "don't date my sister" talk. I loved the boys, and they were protective of me since I was short and a girl. I can take care of myself at times until I had a thing with Spot Conlon. He was the leader or is the leader of Brooklyn. Apparently, it's their turf, and no newsie can go there unless you're from Brooklyn. Which was crazy but, if I get a chance to go there, I'd probably come back with bruised knuckles.
"How are my boys doing?" I went outside and shifted my cap to stay tight and put.
"Hi, pretty girl! We was waiting for you," Albert says.
"Wow, did ya'll pick up a book on chivalry?" I say as I buttoned up sleeves.
"Ya can never rush beauty," Race added.
Jack spotted me and wrapped his hand around my waist. We all pushed each other to the streets jumping and shouting...
"AIN'T IT A FINE LIFE CARRYING THE BANNER THROUGH IT ALL!
A MIGHTY FINE LIFE CARRYING THE BANNER TOUGH AND TALL.
WHEN THAT BELL RINGS, WE GOES WHERE WE WISHES.
WE'S AS FREE AS FISHES, SURE BEATS WASHIN' DISHES.
WHAT A FINE LIFE, CARRYING THE BANNER HOME FREE ALL!"
I laugh at the boys as they jump around the place to place with slight dirt on their faces began to occur as they slide on the ground. As we made our way to work, Romeo and Jack both spot a pretty ginger headed girl whose arm was wrapped around a fancy gent. Jack let go of my waist and sped over to her, but Romeo beat him to her.
"Well, hello, hello, hello, beautiful." Romeo tried to seduce her with his voice but is stopped by Jack, pushing him off.
"Step back, Romeo. Nothin' what concerns you here...Morning Miss. Can I interest you in the latest news?"
Jack leans up against a pole, and I hide behind a corner, crossing my arms, waiting to hear her say, "Oh me? Why such a handsome man speaking to me!" Girls love my handsome brother and his cheeky smile. God, it can be annoying.
"The paper isn't out yet." The woman said.
It brought my attention to see she hadn't fallen for Jack's charm. I call some newsies to see the situation.
"I'd be delighted to bring it to you personally."
Jack got closer to her as the man with the woman was about to charge jack. She stopped him and let go of her companion.
"I've got a headline for you: "Cheeky Boy Gets Nothing for His Troubles!" She said with a smile and pushed pass Jack with her companion.
I started laughing as other newsies witnessed Jack's rejection. Romeo, of course, saw and patted Jack on the back.
"Back to the bench slugger. You struck out!" They both turn around to start heading for work.
"I'm crushed!" Jack touched his heart and acts in pain.
