Prompt 3: AU where whatever song your soulmate has stuck (or are just mentally singing) in their head is also stuck in yours (and the only way to find them is that volume increases the closer you are *smirk*)-via the internet/Tumblr images (I combined 2)
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart-
I slammed my earbuds in. I could not take one more second of that song. Sure, it's a great song. Until you're forced to listen to it 14 times a day! Whoever my soulmate is...well, they're in for an earful the second I find out who it is.
Sure, college wasn't too terrible thus far. In fact, I'd been excited to maybe meet my soulmate. Until this! Now, I was finding it impossible to study for my first semester of finals. If I lost my mind before finals... Well, I'd lose my scholarship for starters!
And the very next day, you gave it away-
"I'M GONNA GIVE YOU AWAY THE SECOND I FIND YOU!" My roommate jerked her head up in shock. I ducked my head, embarrassed.
Samantha shook her head and clicked her tongue. "Are they still listening to the same song?"
I nodded. "I'm going to pull my hair out."
"Have you tried forcing them to stop listening by blaring your own song?"
I shook my head and gritted my teeth. "There's no guarantee that it'd get stuck in my head. And besides, I can't study to music!"
"Well, you're either going to have to learn or give up studying altogether. They've been at it for over 48 hours." Samantha chuckled, and I wanted to strangle her. She was already happily settled with her soulmate. They'd been high school sweethearts and had had a long sit down discussing what songs were okay and what wasn't. The wedding was next month. If she makes it that long, I growled in my head.
This year, to save me from tears-
I slammed my notebook shut. "I'm going for a walk." I gathered my things and stormed out the door. Fortunately, there was a park just across the street from my apartment. I settled down on a bench and opened my notebook to one of the practice problems I'd been working on. Well, trying to.
Okay, so, if a=x+y to even get to the second part of the problem, I need to... HEY! I startled awake and realized that several hours had passed. HEY! I cursed myself for my stupid ringtone and answered the phone. "Where are you, Judy? It's 10:30!" I checked the clock, she was right. The darkness should have told me. "It's been 4 hours, are you okay?"
I yawned. "No, actually, I'm great. I finally got some sleep. Yeah, I'm headed back." And with that, I walked back to my apartment and fell asleep in my bed for the first time in a week.
I woke up in the morning and startled. My head was completely clear. I began reciting the Declaration of Independence to keep it that way but sent good vibes out into the universe for my soulmate. Considering that the music had only started since the beginning of the school year, I was assuming they-whoever they were-that this was finals week for them, too. So, good luck, Whoever You Are.
I walked into the testing center and handed the woman my I.D. and she smiled at me. "Which one are you here for, hun?"
"College Algebra."
Her eyebrows raised. "You're a freshman? Couldn't have guessed it. You look a lot... older." I grimaced, knowing she meant heavier. "Well, here ya go. Good luck." She handed me the test, and I took a seat.
