It was a cool but sunny morning as Day was walking to school with her best friend Lizzie. They went the usual way. Day would walk to Lizzie's house, and then her and Lizzie would walk to school going down Sunshine St. and then turn the corner to get to school. They would see the usual Sycamore tree and the abandoned yellow house, but today some workers were at the house taking off the shutters in the front.
"I wonder what they're fixing up the house up for, it's not like anyone would want to move in it," said Lizzie
"I don't know maybe they just want the neighborhood to look decent, " said Day
"Maybe," Lizzie responded
As they got to the school doors and went inside, there was a burst of warm, toasty air. Lizzie and Day headed to their lockers, which were right next to each other. That's how Day and Lizzie met was because their lockers were right next to each other. Day opened her locker and put her book bag inside her locker. She looked in the mirror, she looked okay as usual. She grabbed her Science textbook, her Science folder and notebook, and a pencil. Then the bell rang she said bye to Lizzie and headed to Science class.
When she got there she sat down in her usual spot I. The middle of the room. She sat there so she could see out the window. Sometimes she got bored and liked to look out the window. Her teacher walked in, and sat down at his desk.
"Students, please pull out your homework assignment from last night," said Mr. Delgadillo as he was sitting down, "and bring it to my desk please."
Day opened up her Science folder and took out the homework assignment on the Solar System. She got up and took it to Mr. Delgadillo. She went and sat back down and watched the other students take their paper to his desk and Mr. Delgadillo checking off the names on his clip board.
"Now that everybody has turned it their homework, turn to page 42 in your textbook and read the section and don't forget to write down notes," said Mr. Delgadillo.
When school was over, Day met Lizzie at the benches outside of school and then walked home. Past the Sycamore tree and the yellow abandoned house. The house looked surprisingly nice and not shabby like usual. The house was a townhouse. It was yellow with peeling paint. Day and Lizzie walked to Lizzie's house and went inside. Day normally went to Lizzie's house because her mom didn't get off work till five. Day set her backpack down by the door with Lizzie's next to hers.
Day went to the kitchen and grabbed a bag of chips and two Dr. Peppers for Lizzie and herself. They went upstairs to Lizzie's bedroom and turned on the television.
"So how was your day today, " asked Lizzie.
"Like any other Tuesday, " said Day
"Me too," Lizzie said, "Oh but I had a substitute in Math today. "
"I didn't have Math today, " said Day. She glanced at Lizzie, Lizzie was fumbling with something, "What's that," asked Day.
"Oh it is just a watch that my grandfather gave me, " said Lizzie with teary eyes, "He died a week a go, he was 83 years old."
"Oh I am so sorry Lizzy why didn't you tell me," Day said as she was reaching in for a hug.
"I didn't want you to fell sorry for me like you our right now," said Lizzie.
Day's Phone rang. Her mom was outside. Her and Lizzie ran down the stairs. Fay threw away her chip bag. She kept her Dr. Pepper because there was still some in it, and got her backpack.
"Bye," said Day
"Bye," responded Lizzie
Day got in to the middle in the back of the car. Day usually got shot gun, but today her older sister, Emy, was sitting there, so Day sat next to her little sister Isla and her baby brother Fargo. Her sister Emy is fifteen. Day is eleven. Isla is five, and Fargo is two.
"Okay so the reason you guys are all here with me is because we are moving," said Gena their mom.
"Where," said Isla.
"Well we are moving on to Sunshine St., so Day won't have to walk as far to get to school. And then I can easily drive you to Kindergarten."
"So that means it is further for me to walk to walk to school Ugh," said Emy.
"Now now," said mom, "I will happily drive you to school."
"No, I'm good," Emy said quickly.
Just then they pulled to a stop across the street from the abandoned house. Dad was standing in front of the house. Mom got out of the car first, then Emy, then Day, who helped Isla get out next, and their mom helping Fargo out who could barely walk.
"We aren't moving into the abandoned yellow house are we," asked Day.
"We sure are," answered their mom, " Look Fargo its daddy.
"Daddy!" said Fargo.
They walked up to where their dad was and looked at the house.
"Can we go inside," asked Isla looking in the window standing on her tiptoes.
"You sure can," Oscar, their dad said picking up Fargo.
