This is mostly based off of what we believe the ancient Egyptians have eaten. This is mentioned a few times in Sands of Time but mostly shows up in my drabble book under the chapter called Happy Holidays. This is a favored offering for Nephthys in the story and I just loved it. I've made something similar to this but not this exact recipe before and it tastes delicious. The only thing that could be argued are the spices, but my idea is that Egypt is right at the crossroads of the spice trade, they would have more than enough spices as well as trade with Greece to get yogurt and honey and such. This should work but the big thing is that looking into what the recipe would probably be the only real hard thing to pin down is the cooking so watch them in the oven well.
Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1 stick butter
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup oil (olive oil but can substitute)
1 cup Greek yogurt
1 egg
1/2 cup ground almonds
Pinch of salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
extra honey and almonds for garnish to taste
Instructions:
1) cream sugar and butter
2) whisk together dry ingredients; flour, ground almonds, salt, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg.
3) add egg to sugar and butter mixture and cream, add oil and yogurt and mix.
4) combine the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix.
5) Bake at 400 degrees F for 30 minutes until it is brown on top, best made in a ramekin or a cupcake liner.
6) When fresh out of the oven cover the cakes in honey and put on top the almonds slivers if needed. Wait until cooled to eat, while the cake cools it will soak up the honey.
