CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
It’s been a week since I decided to go with Carter back home from Rome and I thought that when we returned, we would settle back into the same monotonous routine that we’ve developed this past five months that we’ve been married.
And that’s been true for a week but this morning, I woke up to the sound of bags being zipped and the sounds of someone shuffling through the room. I open my left eye and immediately close it back when the only ray of light that’s peeking through the curtains blinds it.
I groan and turn to my left and try going back to sleep when I realize something. I sit up and look around, Carter isn’t on the bed next to me but the doors to the closet are open, “Hey, Carter? Are you there?” I call out.
His head pops out of the closet and he smiles, “Yeah, what is it?”
I rub my temples and push myself off the bed, I stumble a little but I regain my composure, “What are you doing?” I ask, walking towards the large closet located a few feet away from the bed.
“Isn’t it obvious? I’m packing,” He says and goes back into the closet to pick out which clothes he plans on packing into the travel bag he has in the closet with him.
The closet is quite large in size and it probably is able to fit an entire car in it. My clothes don’t seem to occupy most of the closet space but that’s because I don’t like owning the latest piece of clothing from the most popular brands.
Carter seems to think otherwise though but thankfully enough, the number of clothes in the closet does not outnumber the number of stars in the sky (That was an awful representation but you know what I mean).
“You aren’t leaving me already, are you? I mean I get that I was terrible at it but you can’t just leave me after we’ve had sex.”
He rolls his eyes, “Don’t even joke about that, Ava. You and I both know we haven’t had sex yet”
I chuckle, “Fine but seriously though, where are you going?”
He drops the clothes he’d been holding a while ago on the top of the luggage bag and turns to look at me, “I’m not going anywhere. We’re going to my parents beach house in The Hamptons.”
I quirk an eyebrow, “And why are we going there?” I ask putting the same kind of emphasis he did a second ago on the word.
He stands up and cups my face in his hands, giving me a quick peck on the lips, “Because I haven’t had the chance to do anything with you since we came back from Rome and I don’t think I can stand not being able to spend time with my beautiful wife just because my father wants to train me to work the company he wants to give me.” He sighs, “Besides, I need a break from everything. I just want to focus on us.” He says kissing me again.
I smile and pull away, “Stop doing that, I just woke up and I have morning breath which doesn’t smell as good as it sounds.”
He wraps his arm around my waist and pull me closer, “Well, I don’t care.” He says leaning in to kiss me.
I wiggle out of his grasp, “I’m serious!”
He chuckles and lets me go, “Fine. Fine. Go get ready, I’ll help you pack your stuff.” he says, grinning suggestively.I glare at him, “I know what you mean by that, so don’t touch my clothes, especially my underwear, or I will castrate you.”
He raises his hand and chuckles, “Fine, I won’t. Geez.”
“Good.” I say eyeing him suspiciously.

“What are you doing here?” Carter asks, walking towards me.
I don’t look at him, I continue staring at the ocean that seems to be so calm and serene under the cloaked night sky. The only thing that seems to illuminate the dark water is the moon and the faint light made by the stars.
I rest my chin on my legs that are folded together against my chest, “Nothing, just watching the ocean.” I say.
I hear shuffling and soon, I feel Carter’s skin brush against mine, “Is something the matter?” he asks.
We arrived Carter’s family beach home a while ago, in the morning but nothing much happened since we came here. Carter’s phone has been blaring non-stop and our little escape has constantly been rudely interrupted by his phone. So, he turned it off, he then said he’d go get some things from the store nearby since the fridge was nearly empty.
I attempted to cook dinner but failed miserably because I was distracted by the surroundings of the beach house and the memories it contained. This wasn’t the first time I’ve stepped into the beach house, I’ve been here many times as a child. Especially during the Summer.
Dad and Sean had this thing where once a week during Summer, they would take a break from everything and join both families as one and do different family activities together.
Mom wouldn’t come of course, because she’d visit her family during the time dad came here. I do recall her coming her once or twice but most of the time, she wouldn’t come, I never understood why and she would bring Jennifer with her, so Jenn has only ever been her as many times as my mother.
She was young then, so I doubt she remembers this place very vividly but I do. I smile at the memories that start making themselves known to me.
“Not really,” I point at a star that seems to be shining a little brighter than the rest, “When I was a kid, dad used to say that when we died, our souls would go up into heaven and when our souls went up, god would gift us with a star to watch over our loved ones whenever we miss them.” I smile, “Though I know a star is made up of gas, I’d like to believe that somewhere he’s watching over me.”
Carter smiles and slings his arm over my shoulder, pulling me closer to him, “He is, Ava. He is.”
I turn to him, “How about your mom? Don’t you have a good memory of her here?” I ask.
He smiles, his eyes full of nostalgia, “I do, when I was younger, mom would bring me out here when night fell, she liked the quiet peacefulness that seemed to be instilled in the air surrounding us by the sound of the sea water. She would then start telling me strange stories of mythological creatures, of roman gods.” He laughs to himself, “I would get so excited for those stories, I’d wait all day just for night to fall.”
I smile at the image of younger Carter getting all excited for his mother’s stories. It’s an endearing image. He turns to me, “Hey, Ava. close your eyes.”
I eye him suspiciously, “No.”
He sighs, “Please?”
I shake my head no, “I don’t have a good feeling about this.”
He shrugs, “Fine, if you won’t close your eyes, I’ll do it with your eyes open then.” He says, standing up. He then lowers his arms so he can wrap them around me.
He’s carrying me now, “What are you going to do?” I ask incredulously.
He winks, “You’ll see.” He says running towards the sea.
My eyes stare at the water horrified, “No! No! I swear to god Carter-”
I don’t get to finish my threat because by the time I say his name, I’m submerged in water. The cold water is a huge contrast to the warm night. I turn around and try looking for Carter but he seems to be missing.
“Don’t tell me you forgot you knew how to swim.” I say still looking around for Carter. “I’m not in the mood for your silly games.” I warn him.
Still no answer.
“Hmph. Fine. I’m leaving.” I say, trying to swim my way back to the shore but something catches me by my hips and Carter’s head submerges from the water and crashes his lips into mine. I smile against his kiss, “Why the sudden want to kiss me?” I ask chuckling.
He lets go of my hips and helps me out of the cold sea water, when we’re finally out of the water, I lay on the sand, which makes the sand particles get stuck to my wet hair and t-shirt while Carter sits right next to me, “So, you gonna answer my question or what?” I ask.
He smiles and runs a hand through his now wet hair, “I feel like I’ve been such an ass before Rome. The biggest ass and I actually don’t deserve to have you by my side right now but somehow by some miracle you chose me and I don’t want to feel like I didn’t get enough stolen kisses from you before you come to your senses and leave me.”
I lean in and kiss him, “Ain’t happening anytime soon.”
