Awkward silence filled Maria's study as June poured wine for both Maria and Edgar. Maria broke it first.

"I hope you found the funeral suitable for your brother's taste."

"I did. Thank you for that."

Neither looked at each other, staring into the wine.

"I plan on assuming the sole crown in seven days," Maria broke the silence again.

"I think that's wise. The kingdom needs a single authority."

"Will your sister agree to keep the terms of the peace treaty when I assume the crown?"

"I can't speak for her, but I believe that she will."

Both lapsed into silence again. Edgar refilled both of their cups.

"Edgar, what will you do now?" Maria asked the question she'd been putting off.

"I would stay on as the general of your armies, my queen."

"It is difficult for me to see you. I know I have no right to say it."

"It's what Ralse would have wanted."

"I know," Maria paused. "You know, I will have to marry again if the kingdom is to have an heir, which is desperately needs."

"I know. I will protect you from whatever monster you need to ally yourself with to secure the crown."

"I know," Maria looked down at the wine glass again. The sight of Edgar may turn her stomach, but she would be safe.

He wanted me to give this to you if something ever happened to him. Edgar pulled a sealed letter out from under his cloak. He left to give her some privacy as soon as he did. Maria ran her fingers over her late husbands seal for a moment before carefully unsticking it from the paper with a letter opener.

My Dearest Maria,

Know that I will love you until time ends. I had never hoped to be so lucky as to have a wife as clever and strong as you. I am so sorry for all that you have been through. And currently must be enduring if Edgar has given you this letter.

I suspect Draco is alive. We were never able to find him. There was no talk of him or his past heroic deeds which leads me to suspect that he's alive somewhere in the world. I know that whatever you may feel for me, he is your first love. I believe that he will come for you if you call him to help you through this time.

I wish all of the best for you and a long, prosperous life. You are a credit to your family and your kingdom. It was an honor to get to know you and to love you. Your courage and cunning will get you through whatever comes next. I believe that you are a survivor.

If you wish for Edgar's assistance, show him this letter. I believe that he loves you as a sister in his own way. If you can find happiness in each other, you have my blessings. If you wish to choose otherwise, I know you will find someone worthy to give you children that will have your strength and your mind.

Life is short. Often cruel, even to kings and queens. But I would not change a moment of it because I got to spend moments with you.

I love you,

Ralse
