"Betty I don't understand why you can't be like me, when I was your age I listened to my mum, I'm so disappointed in you" Alice said walking out of the kitchen, Betty had been just 3 minutes late coming back from the library where she had been studying. Betty texted Veronica a text asking her to come over ASAP.

"Look Betty, Alice is going to be Alice, you need to really piss her off somehow" Veronica whispered lying on Betty's bed admiring her manicure, "but how do I piss her off V, I mean nobody beats the wrath of Alice Smith alive at least" Veronica sprung her from where she was sat, "bring a date to your mum's New Years Eve party" Betty sat up "that's great V, she's always like 'Oh Betty why can't you find a decent man like Veronica or your sister' I just want to have my first relationship by myself and my mum not have a go at me", "Jughead Jones" Veronica blurted standing up, "invite your Juggie to be your date, you never know something might finally happen between the two of you" Betty's heart started to pound and her cheeks red, "no Veronica, he's just my friend, okay? I could never ask him anyway" Veronica sat on her phone for a second before Betty saw the number that was on the screen, Veronica better not call that number "Hi Jughead... it's Veronica... yeah yeah I'm great thanks... look I'm calling to ask if you'd like to be Betty's date to Alice new year's eve party... yeah we all know what she's like Forsythe... alright she'll meet you there at 8:30am, alright bye Jughead" Veronica put her phone down, "so Jughead will meet you at Pop's 8:30 sharp tomorrow morning to talk to you about the party, he said he would happily do it as he knows how much you hate her, he would also like to know why I know his real name is Forsythe". Betty fell back onto her bed cringing, she had been crushing on Jughead for years and now she was going to be alone with him tomorrow night, "thank you V, but I've only ever spent time with Jughead as his friend not his date" "oh B you'll be fine, it's just a party" just a party she thought, Betty and Jughead at parties weren't great, Betty wanted to be a good host and Jughead would usually stay with her.

He looked up the next morning to Pop's bell ringing above the door, he'd arrived early to order their food, she sat opposite him in the ruby red booth in the corner, he had always wanted to know how somebody could be so beautiful, "I just wanted to thank you for agreeing to come I know parties aren't really your thing and neither is Alice Smith" she said taking a sip of his milkshake, he didn't even mention it as he always did it to hers, "you don't need to thank me, what time do you want me to come over?" "the party starts at 6 so if you come at 7 then my mum is less lightly to spot you"  "dress code?" "could you wear something smart, casual? No beanie, I swear my mum must be able to sense when that beanie is even on our street", he chuckled at the comment, "cool, do you need me to bring anything?" "a sense of humour would be great, she's not going to understand a joke so I'm going to need your sardonic humour".

The party started and Alice was already whispering comments to Betty as they passed, Betty was passing around plates of canapes to all of her guests, the second a plate was finished Betty was straight back into the kitchen to find another one, she took her heels off for a while because she couldn't bare to walk in them anymore, but Alice caught her "Elizabeth where are your shoes?" she whispered "my ankles were aching from walking" "put them back on Elizabeth you don't live on the street". About 5 minutes later there was a knock on the door, Betty told her mum that she would get it as she hoped it was Jughead, she opened up the door quietly to find Jughead standing there with a bunch of flowers, he wore a pair of smart chinos and a white button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a smart blazer hung over his arm, he looked drop-dead gorgeous, his inky-black hair in wavy curls not hidden by his usual beanie, "these are for you" he handed her the bouquet of  colourful flowers "I'll give them to my mum", she turned around quick walking away, "no Betts" he pulled her back catching her hand "they're for you not your mum, why don't you go and put them in your room" she kissed his cheek quickly before running upstairs, he watched her beaming smile as she disappeared ."They look gorgeous Jug thank you, you didn't need to" they walked into the kitchen where there were bouquets everywhere that people had brought, "I knew that these would all be for your mum so I brought you some", she grabbed a plate just as her mum walked in, "Elizabeth why are there no canapes in the dining room?... Jug-Head what a lovely surprise, Elizabeth why is he at my party?" "he's my date" she said confidently holding his hand trying to hide the intimidation "no he's not Elizabeth, I know you're lying, you'll never have a boyfriend, so why don't you both take some canapes out to my guests" Betty hung her head low "I am Betty's date Miss Smith" Alice laughed "Jughead dear, Elizabeth can't get a boyfriend because nobody would ever want her, so stop lying to yourself and serve some damn canapes" Betty walked away with a tray hoping that Jughead saw her pain. She tried to busy herself  while Jughead tried to help, he could see how embarrassed she was.

About 10 minutes later Jughead pulled her outside away from the party it was freezing cold but he didn't care, he wrapped his blazer over her shoulders and she held it close; it smelt like coffee and old books, "Betty are you okay?" he said shutting the door behind them, "I'm fine Jug I'm used to it" she shrugged her shoulders trying to look strong, he hugged her "Betts she bullies you constantly, you're supposed to be celebrating tonight but instead your running around for everybody else, why don't we go upstairs and relax for a bit" she looked up at him with her big emerald eyes, "but my mum" she mumbled, adjusting his collar "if she comes up I'll just say that I felt dizzy so you told me to lie down" she nodded apprehensively trying to hide her smile. They ran upstairs quickly into her room, "I managed to sneak this up here", he pulled out a bottle of prosecco from underneath her bed and two glasses, "if my mum finds out..." she whispered giggling "she won't, there were no more canapes and your mum seemed to have had a few of these herself", he poured her a glass handing it to her, "thank you" she took off her heels sitting cross legged on her bed, "this is so much better" they clinked their glasses together before taking a sip. They sat talking for a couple of hours finishing their prosecco and eating some of the nibbles he'd also managed to sneak up, they hid the bottle. "I should probably go downstairs" she said getting off of her bed, he pulled her back on "just a little longer" he begged "can't get enough of me?" she teased as she laid next to him, "something like that", he started inching towards her, her heart was pounding fast as she moved towards him, knock knock knock, she jumped away pulling her dress down, "Betty dear your mother wants you downstairs" she looked over at him, drop dead gorgeous and in her room away from everyone, she wanted to stay but knew that she had to go. She walked downstairs grumbling to herself and undoing her hair, she walked into the kitchen where her mum was talking with some of her work colleagues "Elizabeth, a word?"she walked closer, she poked her arm "who said that you could go upstairs, I certainly didn't, can't you just be the perfect daughter for one night" she exclaimed, Betty's eyes filled with tears as she felt somebody walking behind her, "no" they said still walking towards them, "you cannot talk to your daughter like that" Jughead said, "I can, she's my daughter", "I'm not your slave mum, I'm 17 and I live my life in fear of you every single day, do you know what that feels like? You know what Happy New Year mum" Betty walked away going upstairs wiping a tear away. "You know maybe if you treated her as somebody equal to you she'd actually want to talk to you" he started walking away angry at her, his dad might not have always been there but when he knew what he was doing he stopped, "don't become her boyfriend Jug-Head you'll regret it you know with all of her problems" Alice exclaimed, a little bit too loudly from the alcohol, too late he thought to himself, he'd been in love with Betty for so long he could hardly remember.

Betty had gone up to the attic, it was above her bedroom so felt very quiet and secluded, she climbed up and turned the light on, it was carpeted with a double mattress, pillows and blankets with fairy lights, she'd decorated herself a couple of years ago, she sat there looking out the window feeling guilty, Jughead had spent the whole night trying to comfort her away from her mother and all she could do was worry about what she was going to do next, she heard somebody climbing up, "knock knock" he said climbing onto the mattress, he laid next to her, the only light was from the fairy lights. Her golden curls were splayed over the mattress, he held her hand trying to read her eyes "why does she have to be such a bitch?" she asked moving a curl out of his eyes, "I don't know but look you only have 5 minutes until the new year, just remember you don't have to see her until next year" she laughed as he squeezed her hand, "what do you want to do next year?" she asked making herself comfortable, "go on a road trip and explore somewhere completely new, take my camera and make memories, what about you?" he asked "stand up to the devil, then go do something new and exciting" he looked surprised "are you sure you're ready to stand up to the she-devil?" "I'm certain" she heard people heading into the garden so she opened up the little window that looked over the garden "it must be close to midnight, I don't know what I'd do without you Jug, your wit, your brains, your smile" people started counting down from 10 outside, "who are you going to kiss at midnight?" she asked, 4...3...2...1 "you", and with that she kissed him, but not like a normal new years eve kiss, a proper kiss, she pulled away "happy new year Jug" "happy new year Betts", she kissed him again holding his cheeks lying back down, he placed a hand on her neck and one on her leg gently drawing patterns on her skin, after a few minutes he pulled away, she smiled so brightly he could honestly stare at her all day, "Jug what does this mean?" she asked timidly, "Betty Cooper, will you be my girlfriend?" "yes" she replied giggling, he kissed her again as the fireworks danced in the sky, this really was going to be a happy new year.
