A/N:

I haven't written anything in a while therefore I'm a little rusty, so please excuse any mistakes!

*tumblr request: Hi! I was wondering if you could do a protective geralt x f!reader. Like maybe he rescues her from a monster and he's super protective of her after? Thanks!

Warnings: nothing you wouldn't see in the show (language, gore, all that Jazz)

also it says female reader but I don't think I ever explicitly mention the reader's gender within the writing, so feel free to imagine as you please!

Enjoy x

"I told you to stay in town."

You rolled your eyes, walking alongside the broody, silver-haired witcher. "And I told you I wasn't going to. So here we are."

The Witcher growled, making you smirk.

As much as he acted as if he was annoyed by your presence, he (even though he hated to admit it) secretly found you attractive (and even slightly endearing).

"So what exactly is it we're looking for this time?"

"A kikimora."

"Sounds fun."

Geralt hummed lowly in acknowledgement, amber eyes peering into the woods, glinting in the sunlight.

"The swamp shouldn't be much further," he said.

"How much for this job?"

"Three hundred crowns."

You offered a low whistle, unsure if that was a lot in terms of the job. But since you were out here stomping through the woods towards some smelly swamp alongside the handsome, brooding silver-haired Witcher, you figured that he at least thought it was worth it. Coin was coin, you guess.

You both came to a stop at the water's edge, inspecting the murky water.

You pursed your lips. "So...how do we tell if it's here?"

Before he could respond, the sound of water moving reached your ears.

You both looked over to see the large insect-like beast rise from the water.

"Oh," you breathed, barely hearing Geralt curse as he unsheathed his long sword.

"Get back!" He yelled, deep voice breaking you from your stupor.

Unprepared for the sudden appearance of the monster, you started stumbling backwards, grunting as you tripped over a tree root and hit the ground hard.

Something stabbed through your upper leg, dragging you towards the water. You screamed in pain, gaining Geralts's attention from farther down the water side. "Fuck," he muttered darkly, running towards where the kikimora was dragging you into the water.

"Y/N!"

"Geralt!"

He made a dive for you, trying to grab your hand as you reached for him as the kikimora was dragging you into the water. His large fingers barely grazed yours before you were dragged into the water, pinned under the water.

You were only a human. He would have to work fast to pull you out from the monster's grasp before you drowned.

He stabbed the kikimora in the leg that was pinning you down, through the wound in your own leg.

Under the water, you fought to reach the knife you had dropped from your belt and was lying in the sedement just out of reach.

You grit your teeth as you fought against the urge to scream in pain. You had to hold onto what little air you had. If you could manage to stab it in the leg, or if Geralt could, you'd be able to sit up and breathe. The light filtering through the murky water was beginning to grow blurry with each passing moment.

Above the water, Geralt was able to gain his footing in the water beside your struggling form, and stabbed his sword through the giant leg pinning you down.

The monster screeched and reared back, freeing you.

Geralt reached down and dragged you upwards out of the water and set you on the bank.

He made quick work of the kikimora before he rushed over to you, pressing his fingers to the side of your neck in search of a pulse.

It was faint, but it was there.

"Y/N, wake up. Wake up!"

No response.

He was panicking. Why was he panicking? He doesn't panic. He never panics.

"Y/N!"

He pressed on your chest, urging you to breath.

He leaned down and pinched your mouth open, blowing.

He repeated the cycle for what felt like hours, but in reality it was only a few minutes.

"Breathe, dammit!"

And then, by some miracle, you coughed, water spewing from your mouth. Geralt rolled you onto your side, patting your back as you heaved, his shoulders finally relaxing as he ducked his head in relief.

He sat back and watched as you sat yourself up, pushing your wet hair back from your face. "Did you kiss me?"

"Don't do that again." He said, practically growling. "And no."

You smirked. "I apologize. And sure, I won't accidentally allow a giant bug to drown me again."

His eyes narrowed, but you saw his mouth twitch in almost a smile; a sign of his amusement.

You went to stand but groaned in pain, sitting back down, remembering the gaping wound in your thigh.

"Stay there," Geralt rumbled, trudging over to Roach to fetch the medical supplies he had.

He took care to gently wrap the bandage around your wound before gently lifting you into his arms and settling you on top of Roach. He climbed on behind you, holding you tightly around the waist so you didn't fall off as you started to drift off, your body exhausted from the ordeal.

"Sleep," he murmured to you. "I won't let you go."

You let your eyes slip close and you leaned back against the large witcher behind you.

Geralt felt himself smile as your head gently fell against the bottom of his jaw, your hair gently tickling his nose. He let go of Roach's reigns for a moment to smooth your hair back, taking a moment to brush the apple of your cheek with his thumb.

"Nothing's hurting you again," he murmured. "Not while I'm around."

He never realized how attached he was to you until he almost lost you. He knew he would miss your snarky comments, the way your eyes glinted as you called him broody, the small smile you had whenever you looked up at him because you are so, so much shorter than him.

"You are safe with me."
